Misery

As Lucas drove the long distance to Tulsa, Chloe wondered how on earth she had gotten here and why life should be so miserable. She was sporting a black eye from the beatings that Lucas had given her in the course of their journey and was wearing shades that he had made her wear. She did not even know where they were or where they had been for the past one week; neither could she try to escape, because even though she wasn’t planning to do so, Lucas never ceased to remind her that poor Aiden’s life was in her hands.

“Um, Lucas. I don’t mean to offend you, but are we going to see Aiden?”

“What is it to you?”

“Nothing. I just wondered.”

“Well, stop wondering. Your voice is grating on my nerves. If you want to see the boy again, you should stop disturbing me so that I do not ram us into another car or a tree or something.”
