Escape

“Did you find it?” She asked him, her heart pounding.

“Yes, Miss Chloe. I’m going to slide it under the door because my hand hurts a lot. You can’t tell Lucas I did this though, Miss Chloe. Do you promise?”

“Of course, Aiden. I promise I won’t tell him. I just want to make sure you’re okay and then I’ll lock the door and slide the key back to you so he does not find out.” Chloe lied through her teeth.

After a small hesitation, Aiden slid the key through the small space underneath the door and Chloe groped for it until her fingers touched it, and then she grasped it in a shaking hand and unlocked the door to see Aiden standing in front of it and staring at her with huge eyes. As soon as she saw him, Chloe burst into tears again, afraid to even touch him. He was standing with his right hand, the one with the missing finger held gingerly in front of him, and he backed away as she drew near to him, no doubt scared of being jostled.
