A sad ending

As soon as he lost connection with her, he dialed 911 and told them what had happened, even though he did not know her exact location yet. Tears were streaming from his eyes, and he swiped at them impatiently. The last thing he needed was to get into an accident himself. He needed to be strong for Mildred, who from the way she was sounding was in a very serious condition. Twice now, he had skidded on the ice, and so, he slowed down to a reasonable pace. He put on all his lights, watching for her car as he drove. He had not gone far when he noticed skid marks on the snow on the road that led into the surrounding woods. He slammed his foot on his brakes immediately, causing his car to screech to a halt, even though he could not see anything. Belatedly, he realized that he did not carry a flashlight or any other source of illumination which would be brighter than his phone, but there was nothing he could do about it now.
