TTW Chapter 60: Cochlea (4)

Tatara pulled his hand back, turned around, and prepared to leave. However, he abruptly stopped in his tracks and looked up at the sky once again.

In an instant, Lin Yi swung the Jörmungandr, cutting the flames in half. The sword's hilt transformed into a shield-like shape, while Lin Yi's upper clothing burned away, revealing his muscular torso.

The Quinque returned to its sword form, and Lin Yi gracefully landed on the ground. Without wasting any words, he swiftly approached Tatara, wielding his sword and closing in.

Tatara was caught off guard by Lin Yi's speed, making his own reaction seem clumsy in comparison.

In a matter of seconds, their Kagune and swords clashed continuously, forcing Tatara to retreat.

Seizing an opportunity, Lin Yi deflected Tatara's attack with a single strike. He then held the sword with his left hand and thrust it toward Tatara's throat.

Tatara reacted quickly, grabbing the blade with his bare hands. His eyes contracted as he felt the overwhelming strength of Lin Yi. He struggled to maintain his grip on the blade, which cut into his hand, drawing blood.

Lin Yi smiled faintly. His right hand transformed into a palm, and with a strike, the blade propelled forward like a rocket booster.

"Ah!"

The blade accurately pierced Tatara's throat, causing the sword to fluctuate and change.

Sensing the life-threatening danger, Tatara made a split-second decision. He forcefully turned his head, allowing the blade to sever his head but enabling him to escape.

With blood streaming from his neck, Tatara retreated several meters, his head hanging by a thread, presenting a pitiful sight. However, the severed part quickly extended threads of blood and flesh, reconnecting his head in no time.

As his injuries healed, Tatara continued to breathe heavily, one hand covering his neck.

The sensation he felt wasn't that of being slashed but rather like being fiercely bitten by a ghoul on the neck.

Tatara glanced at the harmless-looking long sword in Lin Yi's hand, which had returned to its original form.

"Is that Special Investigator Lin Yi?"

"Help has arrived! It's Senior Lin, a Special Class Investigator!"

"Counterattack! Reinforcements are here! Drive out these scum!"

The events unfolded so rapidly that the crowd only began to react now. Excited shouts filled the air, boosting morale.

They witnessed Lin Yi severely injuring the terrifying monster that had killed the warden and others in just a few encounters.

Lin Yi looked at the blade in his hand, its glow shining brightly, and chuckled as he caressed it.

"It seems like Jörmungandr finds you quite delicious."

Aogiri Tree had obtained some information about Lin Yi from the CCG, so Tatara, after calming down, wasn't too surprised.

"Hey, we're both from China. Can't we make things less troublesome?"

Lin Yi sighed, helplessly rubbing his forehead. Tatara, the vice-leader of the Chi She Lian, had fled to Japan after their organization was destroyed and became a cadre of Aogiri Tree.

Information within the CCG and the original work had long warned about the dangers posed by Tatara.

"Well, it seems you know me well."

Tatara's voice carried a hint of anger; he didn't like others mentioning his past.

"Quick, run! Lord Tatara is angry."

"Leave this place quickly."

The surrounding ghouls, witnessing the scene, felt as if they had encountered a deep-sea predator. Frightened, they quickly fled, preferring to head towards the depths of Cochlea rather than stay here.

"I command you all to leave this to me and kill all the invading ghouls."

Lin Yi spoke calmly.

"Senior Lin, we can assist in killing that ghoul."

The investigators, relieved of the sudden pressure, were still somewhat puzzled and wanted to help Lin Yi defeat the enemy's 'leader' first.

"He's not someone you can handle. Leave quickly."

Lin Yi kindly reminded them, "Try to survive until reinforcements arrive from headquarters. I'll handle things here."

"Yes."

Lin Yi's words instantly boosted the crowd's confidence. The investigators shouted in unison and quickly began to retreat.

Tatara didn't obstruct them at all and remained silent throughout.

This was an agreement between the two.

Tatara knew he couldn't control his ghoul form. In the next moment, his Kagune expanded from the ends of his arms, ripping his clothes apart.

Countless silver-white Kagune spread out, causing his body to grow taller, reaching a height of three meters, resembling a silver metal giant.

Smoke billowed from his body with every breath, scorching hot.

Lin Yi's expression turned serious as he abandoned any sense of humor. Tatara's Kagune form had the potential to rival that of an SSS-rated ghoul, but he couldn't fully control it. Once transformed, he would lose his sanity and could only rely on instinct to fight, greatly reducing his power.

"Roar!"

Tatara spewed a terrifying tongue of fire, but his target wasn't Lin Yi. The rolling waves of flames instantly destroyed a long bridge, causing countless steel and cement debris to fall.

"Are you trying to destroy Cochlea?"

Lin Yi flashed and leaped into the air. His sword transformed in his hand, becoming a crude two-meter-long blade.

"Clang!"

The silver giant raised its hand to block, and the clash of metal echoed, producing a sonic boom due to the immense power.

Tatara's current attack and defense capabilities were on par with an SSS-rated ghoul, but his speed was too slow, and his combat instincts were solely based on instinct, reducing the fatality he could cause.
