Close Call

Kureo Mado looked astonished as he faced a ghoul who effortlessly countered his attack. Yamori, a tall figure with wing-like kagune, smirked and reached for Mado's head.

"Senior Mado!"

Amon arrived late, wielding a powerful Koukaku Quinque. However, his clumsiness made his movements slow and ineffective against Yamori.

Yamori evaded Amon's attack with ease, halting his actions.

Mado, despite his broken Quinque, remained determined and agitated instead of retreating. Amon nervously stood by Mado's side, gripping his Quinque tightly and sweating profusely.

"I have some spare time today, so I'll play with you guys," Yamori taunted, leisurely adjusting his sleeves and swaying his head.

In an instant, Yamori disappeared from his original position, appearing behind Mado before he could react. A flick of his kagune sent both Mado and Amon flying.

"Ahh!"

Crashing into the wall, Mado and Amon spat out blood, their injuries evident.

Yamori reveled in toying with his prey, casually swinging the wrench in his hand.

"How should I handle you?" Yamori whispered to himself, gesturing with his finger in an exaggerated way. "Should I remove your limbs or create a skull specimen? Maybe I'll take your fingers, one by one!"

As Yamori spoke, his excitement grew. He started breathing heavily, and his face twisted into a disturbing expression, resembling a wild dog. Suddenly, he charged towards the two individuals.

As Yamori charged towards them, someone suddenly blocked his path.

Looking down, Yamori found Asaki Fueguchi firmly gripping his right foot. Asaki understood that their survival depended on the investigators' lives and was determined to survive.

Angered by Asaki's interference, Yamori ruthlessly kicked him repeatedly, breaking his ribs. Only a ghoul's regenerative abilities allowed Asaki to endure such attacks.

"Senior Mado, maybe we should—" Amon suggested retreat, confused by the ghoul's unexpected help.

"Amon! The enemy is right in front of us! Even if our Quinques are broken, as long as we have a breath left, we must fight!" Mado roared, interrupting him.

Having experienced the guilt of fleeing and abandoning his wife, only to witness her being devoured by ghouls, Mado had sworn to never run away from a battle again.

Despite his broken leg, Mado limped forward, charging at Yamori with his damaged Quinque.

"Senior!"

Gritting his teeth, Amon joined Mado in rushing towards Yamori.

"Why are you all in such a hurry to die?" Yamori grew furious at their provocation.

His kagune rose sharply, sharp as a sword, and stabbed fiercely, piercing Asaki Fueguchi's chest.

"Ahh!"

Asaki's black blood spewed out, and he finally released his grip, collapsing motionless on the ground.

Mado and Amon simultaneously attacked Yamori from the left and right. Amon's powerful blow struck the kagune, but it showed no response. The tremendous force bounced Amon back, making it impossible to hold onto his Quinque, and he was thrown away.

Mado attempted a thrust with his broken Quinque, but Yamori effortlessly evaded and grabbed his arm.

"Ah!"

Yamori exerted a little force, crushing the bones in Mado's wrist. Mado cried out in misery, his Quinque falling to the ground. Yamori raised the wrench high and struck Mado's face, sending him flying.

Mado collapsed on the ground, his vision blurred, his face swollen and unrecognizable. His breathing grew weak as countless memories flashed through his mind.

With his thoughts stalling and vision fading, Mado wondered if this was the end.

"Senior Mado!"

Amon struggled to get up but fell back to the ground.

"Don't die

so easily. Stay and play with me some more," Yamori taunted, approaching Mado with the wrench, ready to strike again.

However, before the wrench could fall, it was abruptly halted in mid-air. Yamori paused, realizing that someone had grabbed his wrist.

A terrible force struggled against him, preventing him from gaining the upper hand.

"I told you, old man, that the 20th Ward is not something you can meddle with. You didn't listen to advice and ended up in such a sorry state."

Finally arriving at the last moment, Lin Yi intervened.

While Lin Yi held Yamori's wrist, his gaze remained on Mado, who lay on the ground. Mado, his former superior and old partner.

Despite appearing dazed, Mado could still hear Lin Yi's voice. He suddenly smiled, his mind emptying as he fell into a coma.

Yamori felt deeply insulted. The sudden arrival of this investigator who completely ignored him, treating him as if he were invisible, enraged him to the point of madness.

"Go to hell!"

Two kagune shot out towards Lin Yi's head like springs.

Using the white briefcase in his hand to block, Lin Yi's briefcase shattered instantly, revealing crimson Quinque in the air. The Quinque rapidly expanded and transformed, forming a longsword at an indiscernible speed.

"Clang!"

The sound of metal colliding echoed in the air.
