Chapter 9

“It’s my father,” Dezi said as he hurriedly threw his clothes on and started for the front door.

“No!” Rox yelled out. “Don’t go out there. He’s here to see me. I’ll go. That way you don’t have to face him.”

“Don’t be silly, Rox. He’s already seen my car.”

“I don’t care. This is my fight, not yours.”

* * * *

Leaving Dezi at the window, Rox slowly opened the door. “Can I help you?” he called out while steppingdown the two steps to get to the ground.

“Is this your trailer?”

“Yes, sir, it is.”

“What are you doing on this property?”

“Well, I just bought the trailer from a friend of mine. He’d been living here for about three years. I can show you the receipt if there’s any doubt.” Rox saw the man’s gaze begin to move all over him, andhe knew what he was thinking. Trailer trash. He suddenly wished his boots weren’t quite so scuffed, or his clothes not quite so ragged, but he was what he was and couldn’t do anything about it now.
