The Sinful Hero (MHA)

Izuku Midoriya was born with a Quirk, but he might as well have been Quirkless for all the good his Quirk did for him. What happens, then, when his seemingly worthless Quirk activates and he recognizes himself as the embodiment of sin? Can he still follow his dream of becoming a pro hero?

Izuku’s Newest Broken Power And The Failed Infiltration

"Hmm," Izuku groaned as he sat on the floor and tested to learn the function of his newest power. He'd been at it for minutes, focus wavering between the fights playing out between the other teams on the monitors before him and the rest of the class and his testing, but it seemed this new power of Sloth was like that of Gluttony; they were autonomous Mutant-Quirk types.

He couldn't get the yellow energy to leave his body or manifest something upon it. The only thing that separated the powers of Sloth and Gluttony apart was the fact that Izuku now constantly emitted a dim yellow glow. The more static his movement was, the greater the intensity of his Sloth's glow; yet, Izuku didn't feel like he was changing or stockpiling anything within himself.

Nearing the second hour since he had unlocked the power, Izuku felt inclined to just pay his Wrath Incarnation another visit, when he was suddenly approached by none other than Ibara.

"You seem agitated," she whispered as she made, and took a seat on, a nest of vines next to him.

"You'd be annoyed too if you wasted an hours on something so stupid," Izuku scoffed.

"I'm not talking about your new… power. I meant, that boy Bakugo." Getting closer and speaking even softer, she continued, "This is the second time I've seen you two together and both times you looked like you were ready to fight him to the death."

"Perhaps in another world, in a different time, and if I were another person, I'd more than gladly go that far for what he's done to me. But, in the here and now, humiliation is the best revenge I can serve," Izuku snorted dismissively.

"I'm sure someone as competent as you already knows the folly of pursuing revenge," Ibara sighed. "I don't know and won't ask about your past with him, but Lord knows nothing good can come of antagonizing that boy. After all, hatred works in a cycle, breeding revenge and negativity that can only be stopped by a greater man."

"Heh," Izuku chuckled under his grin, "A shame I don't want to be a greater man, then. In fact, I can't be a greater man," Izuku's eyes dimmed, "It's just not in my nature; not with my Quirk..."

"Well, that wraps today's lesson," Eraserhead interjected loud enough to stop the words Ibara was about to say.

"For the first Foundational Heroic's class, you all did well enough," Vlad King took over to relieve his fellow teacher of the debriefing procedure. "Some of you did exceptionally well," he eye'd Izuku, Mineta, Todoroki, and Komori — the girl who could produce mushroom spores with her Quirk — "Most of you, though, performed just about average for a bunch of first-timers."

"But, by the end of the semester, I expect you all to perform better than you did today. For now," Vlad King continued, "we'll hold off on any more Joint-Class battles and excursions and work on your individual skills. The next time you'll gather will be for the Sports Festival in three weeks."

After class was dismissed, Izuku changed out of his hero costume and left for Dagobah Beach to train with Camie; if she showed up, that is. She hadn't been joining him everyday in training afterschool even when they had relatively more lax lives in middle school, so now that they were attending two of the top hero academias in the nation, he didn't exactly expect her to show up as often anymore.

Once he reached the beach, he found it empty save for himself and the neatly arranged piles of trash strewn about. Izuku didn't bother with his usual routine of working out his body and Pride before he entered his subconscious to talk to his Wrath Incarnation.

Sitting down and adopting a meditative posture, Izuku closed his eyes and let his features transform. When he opened his eyes again, he was neither sitting nor at the beach; he stood before the embodiment of his Quirk within his subconscious.

Since his first visit to the place, it had developed to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. No longer were the bounds beyond the tiered pagoda-like building an ever-repeating void, nor was the building itself a pitiful hut of a pagoda.

From where Izuku stood upon entering his inner world, there was earthly soil and vibrant flora. A starry sky full of constellations dimly lit the still-dark world. Where once there stood a two-tiered pagoda, barely large enough to hold a simple room and attic, now sat a massive construct worthy of being called the eighth wonder of the world — had it existed outside of Izuku, anyway.

Izuku walked to the pagoda, staring in contemplation at the newly erected fourth tier, when a familiar voice reigned him from his thoughts.

"Congratulations, you just became theoretically immortal," the voice was his own; though, distorted and amused.

"Excuse me?" Izuku blinked owlishly at his counterpart's words.

"You might not live longer than any other human," the Wrath Incarnation sighed at the thought, "but you've just become a hell of a lot harder to kill with the power of Sloth."

"Pray tell," Izuku rolled his eyes.

"Why don't we make it a game and you take a guess?" Izuku's counterpart smiled maliciously, "Here's a hint: it has to do with regeneration."

"Regeneration?" Izuku paused to think, "And it is another Mutant-type power like Gluttony, right?"

"Yes," a twinkle flashed on the counterpart's eyes.

"Hmm, why is it always active, then? As far as I know, I haven't even been scratched all day." Izuku muttered to himself. Thinking it odd that his power of Sloth was always active when his other Mutant power in Gluttony only activated when he needed it active to work; he only glowed orange when he ate, slept, rested, or studied.

"Wait..." Izuku froze at the thought. He only glowed when the power was activated. He'd been dimly glowing yellow since his power of Sloth had activated. "Glowing a dim yellow… almost like—" his eyes snapped to his counterpart with a mortified face, "—don't tell me."

"Almost like a darker shade of yellow that was mixed with orange?" It laughed at Izuku's expression.

"Am I stockpiling regeneration?" Izuku cringed at the insanity of such an ability.

"Bingo," his counterpart chuckled. "The less you move, the greater the regenerative power of your Sin of Sloth. The longer you stay uninjured, the more regenerative power you'll have stockpiled. Unfortunately, there is a limit to how much you can stockpile, but even then, you'd still be left with the power to instantly heal at least three all-but-fatal wounds."

"And… that's only with the initial power I currently have," Izuku solemnly said.

"Of course, as you continue cultivating sins the limits of your power will continue to rise."

Camie didn't make it to her evening training sessions with Izuku before the sun had crossed the horizon and taken the day to dusk. Thus, Izuku continued to work on himself as he would any other day without his companion before he left for his home and continued to study or entertain himself for the next day to start anew.

For a time he wanted to test the limits of his newly-unlocked regenerative powers, but he wasn't savage or desperate enough to injure himself for purely that reason. He'd take his Wrath Incarnation word at face value as it had yet to fail him; moreover, he wasn't masochistic enough to bear needless pain.

After the night passed and it was once more time to go to U.A, Izuku's expected schedule was slighted at the point of reaching the school's gates. He had left at the same times he had the previous two days, met and chatted with Jiro on their train ride to school, but as they approached the gates, a mass of news reporters barred them from progressing.

"Is it true that the Symbol of Peace, All Might, is teaching this year?" Izuku saw a news reporter shove their microphone in one of the older-looking student's face.

"Care to comment on what is like to learn from All Might himself?" Another reporter harassed a different upperclassman.

"Rumor has it that the Symbol of Peace isn't much of a teacher, is that true?" The cycle repeated.

Izuku and Jiro weren't approached. They might have been looked at by some of the reporters, but the moment their youth and a lack of recognition hit, they were ignored. Still, the reporters proved to be a nuisance as they blocked everyone's ability to enter the campus. If they continued to waste time, they would eventually be late.

"Think our homeroom teachers will give us a pass for being blocked by these pests?" Izuku asked with more than a little annoyance tainting his tone.

"Probably not," Jiro sighed. "Look, Aizawa-sensei and Present Mic are already coming over to handle it."

"Sights like these compel me to follow the example of your homeroom teacher when dealing with the media," Izuku said as he and Jiro approached after the reporters started making space for them and the rest of the arriving student body.

Jiro nodded quietly and before long, the two split for their respective classes.

"Morning, Midoriya," Pony said the moment Izuku came through the door — in English, of course.

"What's up?" Izuku returned a greeting.

"Nothing much. Though, it was somewhat of a nightmare getting past all the reporters earlier."

"I got to school just in time to see Eraserhead and our English teacher deal with the crowd."

"Lucky," Pony pouted as Izuku took Honuneki's seat, two seats in front of his own, to sit next to her. "Anyways," she suddenly shied away as she continued, "about the tutoring thing..."

"I'm good for any time and place during the weekends," Izuku spoke up as her words died down.

"Really?" Pony's eyes shined with unidentifiable emotion.

"Yup, I mean it literally too, since I practically don't need to sleep after unlocking the power of Gluttony," Izuku chuckled.

Despite his claim, it was decided that they would gather at a cafe in downtown Musutafu during noon on Saturdays, before Izuku was forced to move to his seat as Honuneki arrived. Shortly thereafter, Vlad King entered to start the school day.

"For homeroom today, I'm going to need you all to decide on a class president and vice president." Vlad King said.

The already-silent class remained silent even as the seconds dragged after Vlad King had already finished speaking.

Eventually, Monoma rose to start speaking, but he was cut off before he could even get a word in as Tokage said, "Nope. I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say that we don't want your extremist views representing our class to all the other first years." Despite the rather tame exchange with Class 1-A yesterday, Monoma remained feeling discontent with them for no discernable reason.

Ignoring the chorus of "Mhmm"s and "yeah"s, Monoma shook his head and said, "As much as it pains me to admit it, obviously, I won't compete against Midoriya for the position of class president. He's got undisputable power, a small following, and, if my understanding of English is to be trusted, an ability that would best suit a class president even in a normal high school setting.

"However," Monoma's eyes narrowed, "the vice president position is still up for debate and I want it."

"Like I said, you're too extreme to be representing our class, even if it is in the unlikely event that Midoriya won't be able to fulfill that duty."

"I came in second for the Quirk Apprehension Test and was one of the only four students in our class that managed to secure a complete victory during yesterday's Battle Trial!" Monoma argued, "If not me, who else would you have as class V.P."

"Funny you should ask," Ibara spoke up, "but, didn't Kendo also complete both objectives of yesterday's trial? Lord forgive me for the words of disrespect, but I think she's infinitely more liked than you are, and just as capable if yesterday's performance was anything to go by."

"Dude, I'd totally pick her over you," Tsuburaba nodded with closed eyes. "I'd even pick Komori, even if she did get her 'complete victory' by simply being matched with that Todoroki guy from Class 1-A."

Enough people voiced their opinions for Monoma to 'gracefully' stop fighting over the class V.P. position with Kendo over. He wasn't as liked as her, and since the position was one of group representation, the outcome was inevitable.

Izuku, though, didn't expect to just be handed the class president position. He wasn't complaining as his sleepless days needed more tasks for him to busy himself with, but he did have his questions. When he got answers, it caused him to re-evaluate his class' intellect as a whole.

Apparently, they had already seen the conclusion coming after yesterday's battle trial. Where he had shown the magnitude of his strength during the Quirk Apprehension Test, his relationships with Ibara, Pony, Monoma, and Tsuburaba were where he displayed his charisma.

During the battle trail, however, he had apparently shown more restraint than was expected as he not only abandoned all positions of assault in favor of support during the exercise; this, despite the obvious mismatching of roles when looking at his profile and that of his partner's. But when he attacked, it was with just enough strength to end the match without dealing his clearly hated opponent any injuries.

In a state where he was consumed with Wrath, literally and quirk-wise, he stayed true to the values of pro heroes and resolved the exercise with as little strength and as efficiently as possible. Simply said, it was all everyone needed to see to believe he was the best candidate for the leadership position this early.

Thus, Izuku found himself standing before the classroom, by the podium with Kendo to his left. "I've never been a class president before, but thanks for the vote of confidence." Shooting Kendo a look, he added, "hopefully, with someone as competent as Kendo acting as my V.P, I'll be kept in line if I think of doing anything too stupid."

Lectures for the day carried on as they did the day before, and presumably as they would going forward for the rest of the students' time at U.A.

Izuku cruised through his classes, having studied all the material being taught before he had even enrolled as a student. He, along with Kodai — a girl who could manipulate the size of inanimate objects — Shishida, and Tokage, where among the few who didn't at all struggle with the lectures. Beyond them, the majority of the class stuck to above-average to high marks.

However, even at U.A, even in a Hero Department Class that only excepted the best of the best, there existed the occasional idiot in Tsuburaba. Pony was technically on the brown-haired Solid-Air user's level, but that was less because she struggled academically and more because she just barely understood Japanese well enough to make the cut for learning at U.A.

Eventually, morning lectures came to an end and it would be time for lunch once again. Like the previous day, Izuku took his time after classes came to an end and went to the teacher's lounge to heat up his food.

However…

"Caution! Caution! Level Three Security Breach has been detected!" The school's public announcement system blared at an uncomfortably loud volume.

"Hmm," Izuku didn't bother with the alarm as he was already in one of the safest places on campus; nevermind the fact that he was among the most powerful students on campus. He was more concerned with the slowly enlarging black hole that had formed a couple feet away from him.

"What do we have here?" Izuku said, already transformed, as he peered a hole into the anomaly before him.

"Oh dear," a deep voice said from within the slowly revolving black-hole-like fog. "It won't bid well for our plans if a student were to run his mouth to the staff. You'll just have to come with me."

As a tendril of black mist shot towards Izuku, the green-haired boy merely narrowed his eyes. With several bursts of green, quick enough for the average man to confuse with a single flash, Izuku appeared right next to the black hole. The moment his index finger came in contact with the edge of the swirling hole, the entire construct, reaching even to the extended tendrils of mist, froze in place; unable to move, and entirely at Izuku's mercy.

"Now then," Izuku smirked tauntingly at the frozen black fog of a person, "I wonder what these 'plans' you mentioned consisted of."

He noticed a file affixed to the frozen fog and picked it from the air with his free hand. "Class schedules?" Izuku raised a brow, "What could you possibly want with Class 3-B's semesterly schedule? I know you materialized right before the file and picked it quickly before noticing me, so it should have been your goal in infiltrating the school… but, why?"

Of course, when dealing with someone with teleporation powers Izuku wasn't stupid enough to unfreeze even a cell of their body, lest he give them the chance to flee right under his nose. No, instead, for someone as dangerous as a warp user, Izuku conducted himself more seriously than he had in a long time; more serious than he had been for the Entrance Exam, Quirk Apprehension Test, and Battle Trial combined.

The green of his Pride almost scalded with how potent it grew before the index finger that had been making contact with the infiltrator was joined by the rest of Izuku's hand, wrapping around in a gripping fashion that ended up being a chokehold. With a slow pull, Izuku forced the kinetic forces acting on the creator of the black fog to completely materialize him out in a corporeal form.

Such a simple action, one which looked like he was pulling someone out of a portal, might as well have been brain surgery for how complex the mechanisms involved ended up being. It wasn't as simple as adding kinetic vectors and pulling. Rather, because his target was both gaseous in form and had to be kept frozen in space, Izuku had to use his kinetic forcefield to the limit of his ability just to feel and slowly drag out the infiltrator.

Any mistake could potentially end the warp user's life. Too much kinetic energy acting on the wrong part of their body could traumatize it in just about every conceivable way and too little wouldn't accomplish anything at all. Thus, Izuku took his time.

Eventually, the minutes came to pass and at last, he finished extracting the now identifiable man responsible for infiltrating into U.A. By the end of it all, Izuku was left a sweating pitiful mess as he gasped for air and was forced to take the man down to the floor with him as he fought to catch his breath.

Dozens of minutes had passed, Izuku not being quite able to tell exactly how much time had passed, and the perpetual use of some of the highest applications of his Pride had left him feeling like he had ran around the country at a world-record pace. Regretfully, his Sin of Gluttony couldn't stockpile Pride as it could the power of Sloth and thus, the ability couldn't be used extensively without severe repercussions.

"Midoriya… Explain what's going on in here," Eraserhead's serious voice suddenly caused Izuku's borderline delirious state to quickly sober up.

"I came here to heat up my food… just like yesterday… when the alarm went off," Izuku struggled to say as he gasped for air. "Then... this guy warped into the room, here... out of thin air and tried to take a copy of Class 3-B's schedule and me with him.

"The guy's got a tricky gaseous Warp Quirk... so after I caught him, I spent… I don't know, like an hour, drawing him out of the black hole he came out of. Not gonna lie, it's been pretty exhausting... So, if you would kindly erase our Quirks to prevent his escape and cuff him, I'd really appreciate it..."

Ever the prepared hero, Eraserhead's costume always had at least three Quirk Suppressant cuffs equipped. The erasure hero, thus took one and fulfilled Izuku's wish. As Eraserhead's eyes glowed red and his long black hair rose to defy gravity, Izuku felt his power of Pride wane begrudgingly and eventually extinguish beyond his calling.

For some reason, though, the warp-using infiltrator still remained cloaked in the black misty fog that enabled his Quirk even under the duress of Eraserhead's Quirk and the Quirk Suppressant cuffs.

For what remained of the school day, Izuku was excused so as to more precisely relay what had happened at the teachers lounge while the now-apprehended would-be infiltrator was taken away by the authorities. Yet, Izuku could only scoff in discontent as what should have been a simple debriefing felt more like an interrogation.

Just about all the members of U.A's staff showed up to hear him recount the event before principal Nezu. But if that were the extent of it, Izuku would have dismissed the intensity of his audience as par for the course for a cautious hero school.

Add to said-audience an atmosphere reminiscent of a barracks before the frontlines of a war, the almost tangible seriousness All Might emitted — which dwarfed that of all the other pro heroes in attendance combined — and the fact that a human lie detector was present, and Izuku could be excused for thinking he was being tried for crimes against humanity.

Still, in spite of the abysmal atmosphere present, after he informed everyone of what had happened, when all was said and done, he was simply excused. A couple teachers joked to him about using his Quirk outside of their supervision, but most gave him subtle nods of appreciation for doing what he did.

With classes already having been canceled for the day, Izuku was told to go home and prepare for the next day, leaving without any penalty. By the time he was excused, the student body had already mostly cleared out. So, Izuku took his Pride-exhausted self to the beach and added physical exhaustion to his status before turning in for the day and heading home.

"Master… have you seen the news?" A raspy voice grimly said. "Kurogiri, that careless idiot, messed up and got himself caught. How am I going to kill All Might, now?"

"Hmm," a groan of contemplation could faintly be heard past the tv static that overwhelmed what looked like a dimly lit run-down bar. "Be patient Tomura. I'll admit, it was unexpected for him to have been captured as easily as he did. But, what is it that I keep telling you?"

"We just have to learn from our mistakes?" the raspy-voiced Tomura asked with a confused glint in his eyes.

"That's right. If you fail, you can just start anew and try again. Regarding Kurogiri, his situation is already being taken care of." The voice from beyond the television paused to chuckle, "Once we get your warping companion back, we'll be that much more ready to tackle whatever it was that caught him today."

"Isn't he being delivered to Tartarus?" Tomura asked. Everyone knew the prison, Tartarus, to be an inescapable fortress worthy of housing only the most dangerous and heinous villains.

"It matters not when we have another warping Quirk and moles in the police force," the 'master' said. "It's not in my best interest to blatantly bust our little friend out and reveal myself to the world yet, but by ensuring that he's delivered to Tartarus with minimal security while en route..." He paused for a couple seconds, "I can do this..."

At that moment, on the armored police van that carried a completely restrained Kurogiri — the warping villain Izuku had captured — a viscous black liquid that reeked of sewage shot out of all of Kurogiri's orifices and enveloped him before both he and the liquid dissolved into nothing. Perhaps something may have been accomplished if the van carried more than just Kurogiri and a driver, but by the time the driver noticed anything amiss, his would-be prisoner had long-since escaped.

Next thing Tomura heard through the television was Kurogiri coughing and thanking their master for rescuing him. "Kurogiri… how did you fail such an easy mission?" Tomura asked with evident derision, "You had the coordinates to the teachers lounge and knew where the files we needed were before you left."

"A kid," Kurogiri started explaining after 'the master' removed the muzzle restraint on his face, "using some sort of manipulation Quirk caught me. Before I teleported, he was there and must have been a freshman in the Hero Department, considering the lack of information I have on him. He was good enough to be a recommendation student if his skill was any indicator."

"You got caught by a kid? And not just any kid but a freshman nobody who's probably only taken a single heroics class in his life? Kurogiri, the warping master of the fucking Leage of Villains, really?" Tomura growled.

"I try to not make excuses, but there was really nothing I could do," Kurogiri sighed, "the boy, Midoriya, had an extremely powerful Quirk that made him just as fast as All Might and seized control of my body the moment he touched me. He was also cautious enough to not even unfreeze me for questioning until Eraserhead showed up to properly secure me with Quirk Suppressant cuffs."

"Midoriya?" 'the master' asked before Tomura could continue to berate Kurogiri. With a knowing chuckle he said, "I suppose I can't fault you if you had the misfortune of crossing paths with Izuku Midoriya; this year's top ranking and current record holder of U.A's Entrance Exam's practical exam.

"Apparently," 'the master' intoned, "the boy has three Quirk-like powers onto his real Quirk, Sin. What you described was his Kinetikinesis power of Pride."

"What?! Three Quirks? But only you can have multiple Quirks, master!" Tomura all but shouted.

"It's all a matter of perspective, Tomura." 'the master' patiently explained, "As you know, I was only born with one Quirk just like everyone else. The young man who captured Kurogiri also only has one Quirk, only his is just powerful and versatile enough to function like three separate Quirks onto themselves."

"Hmph! One Quirk or three, it doesn't matter to me. That kid is a filthy cheater that ruined my plan. He's already entered my hit list. After All Might, he's next," Tomura sneered.

"So long as you take things one step at a time… I believe you can accomplish great things," 'the master' said. "But," his voice grew firm, "I believe you should give this Midoriya boy a chance. With a background like his, he may even end up becoming a valuable tool to your League of Villains."

"What makes you think you we can tempt him over to our side? With a super Quirk that let him beat Kurogiri as a freshman, he'll have everything he could ever want if he just stuck to being a shitty pro hero. Guys with Quirks as strong as everyone makes his out to be, like All Might and Endeavour, always end up becoming entitled and arrogant, shitty pro heroes," Tomura seethed.

"What if I told you he lived like a Quirkless until just over a year ago? That he was raised in a broken and average household? That for most of his life he was bullied or condemned, and that even after he re-awoke his Quirk, it turned out to be 'villainous' in nature, just like your Decay?" 'The master' asked.

"Izuku Midoriya has every reason to hate society as much as you do, having lived both extremes of the negative spectrum when it comes to Quirks. I'd imagine that with a few more guided pokes and prods, he'd willingly join you.

"He may have ruined your very first move as the leader of the League of Villains, but in the end we didn't lose anything of value. Kurogiri's existence may have been uncovered, but his ties to us remain obscure. The League of Villains is still an unknown entity and our true goal has yet to be revealed.

"Think about what I've said, Tomura," 'the master,' said. "But always remember that regardless of your decision, I'll always support you."

After around a week, I've returned with yet another chapter for you; a chapter, mind you, that will take this story past 40k words (if you count the author's notes)

This chapter has everything, or almost everything, I guess. Izuku gets another broken Quirk, which apparently isn't as overpowered as most people imagined Sloth to be. There was some action, some chatter and character development, and even the League of Villains was introduced.

Anyways, as I assume everyone can tell, a pretty massive divergence from the canon plot just played out. Kurogiri got captured and Izuku just painted a large target on his back. How everything will play out is still up for debate, so influence me with your comments, please~

Last thing I want to mention is... another question?! Who'd have thunk? The question is: is the slice of life (not action) boring, or would most of you prefer I keep adding similar things to develop characters; i.e. Pony's tutoring, Jiro's exchanges on the train (when relevant, of course), Mineta and/or Tsuburaba's perverted ramblings.

Oh, and thanks for the 500+ followers on fanfiction and almost 74 power stones on Webnovel despite the lack of updates~

Sins:

1st Tier | Wrath [Negative Resonance (Placeholder name)]: Grants Izuku a unique transformation — turns him into a hollowfied visored, sans the hole and mask on his body; like from Bleach? In this state, his instincts take absolute control over his body and focus the entirety of his intent on neutralizing whatever garnered his hatred/wrath. He's learned to control himself with a surplus negativity quotient of upto 5%.

2nd Tier | Pride [Kinetikinesis]: Gives Izuku the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. Has Low-Mid Level Kinetikinesis powers: Can add/subtract kinetic energy from objects and people, can add kinetic energy to himself to move at superhuman speeds, can manipulated gasses to manipulate temperature, can project Pride outside of his body, can shoot pressurized air.

3rd Tier | Gluttony [Abstract Storage]: Allows Izuku to consume and stockpile an infinite amount of resources, ranging from the corporeal (Food and Drink) to the abstract (Sleep and Knowledge). His body then only uses up his stockpiled resources when they are needed in the most optimal fashion.

4th Tier | Sloth [Rapid Recovery]: Izuku's second Mutant-type power that makes him regenerate the less he moves. Stockpiles with Gluttony to the point that he can eventually heal up to three not-fatal wounds.
