Chapter 40

“I’ll take you to the airport. Call it a reward for being a good boy and telling me as much as you did. If I find out you lied…”

“I’m not. As God is my witness, I’m not.”

Beau helped Nash to his feet, and then back to the SUV, with Nash cradling his injured hand against his chest. Half an hour later, Beau watched Nash walk up to a ticket counter, his hand now hidden under his jacket. When Nash was finished, Beau followed him to the security gate, wondering how he’d explain his injuries. Whatever Nash told the agent must have worked, because he was let through. Beau waited until Nash was out of sight before heading out, leaving Nash’s SUV in the lot and taking a cab back to where he’d parked his car, what seemed like too many hours earlier.

Rather than going straight home, because he didn’t want to face Rick’s questions, he found a diner, ordered a late lunch, and placed a call to Whalen.

“He’s been dealt with,” Beau said when Whalen answered.
