Beau, thirty-five, is a gangland enforcer who has gone into hiding rather than following the orders of his boss, Mercer, to harm a rival's kid. He offers Rick a place to stay while he figures out how to put his plan to take Mercer out into action -- without ending up dead himself. Befriending Rick is an act Beau may come to regret. Rick convinces Beau to take him along when he leaves town -- thus working his way into Beau's dangerous life on the run -- and perhaps, into his heart, if Beau can come to grips with the fact that Rick is half his age. “Until then, you’ll get a lot of reading in,” Beau replied.

“Or play games on your laptop?” Rick looked hopefully at him.

“I don’t have any, but maybe after dinner we can find a couple I can download for you. You’re going to need something to keep you busy at night while I’m at work.”

“You got a job?” Rick pumped a fist then sobered, looking hard at him. “Where?”

“At a social club, on their security force.”

Rick brightened. “So it’s a real job. That’s fantastic. I mean, it is a real one, right? Not working for someone like Mercer.”

Beau hesitated. “Yeah, it’s real.” He barely smiled. “I had to fill out the same kind of paperwork you did at the restaurant.” He pushed off the counter, going to check the fridge to see what they could fix for supper.

“Beau.” Rick grabbed his arm. “Tell me whoever owns the place is legit, not some gangster.”

Beau turned to face him. “I can’t, because he is.”

“God damn it!” Rick stormed out of the kitchen.
