The Rise of a Scholar

"Why should I bow before that man?" asked a kid. "He's a top aristocrat of this kingdom. Kid, we're low class-men, born in lower class families. That's why we have to bow before him," answered the man. The kid became curious to know more. "Can I be like him? I also want to be respected by people," the kid said with an affirmed tone. The man started laughing hearing the kid's talks. "Hahaha. You're good in joking, kid. A low-class can't become a Scholar like them," stated the man and walked away. Determined to become a Scholar like the man described, the kid named Kim Yoon Shik decided to become a respected Scholar like the one he saw on the very first day in the Kingdom capital city. Lost his mother & father; pushed away his lover, the protagonist Kim Yoon Shik negotiated all the difficulties in his path and finally achieved the dream that he had seen in his childhood. ~~~~~~~~ Cover photo is taken from Pinterest so the copyrights are owned by its owner. Yoon Shik's hidden emotions

Yoon Shik and Dae Jung arrived in the village and saw the decorations. "Is there some occasion in the village?" Dae Jung asked. Yoon Shik shrugged off his shoulder when a girl named Ahnjong came near Yoon Shik and congratulated him. She is the daughter of the village headman, Dong Hyun. She was wearing a light pink colored hanbok dress and was smiling at Yoon Shik.

"Thank you," replied Yoon Shik and passed a tiny smile to her. He was ready to go ahead to his house when Ahnjong stopped him. "Yoon Shik, there is a celebration tonight as you have passed the exam and made our village proud. It is in the great ground of our village. Father and the other people of the village have made arrangements for the entire event," asserted Ahnjong. "Your father and sister are also there," she further added, putting a gentle smile on her lips.

Yoon Shik nodded. "I will be there in a while. Thank you for telling me," stated Yoon Shik. "Let's go," said Yoon to Dae Jung. As they were walking, they saw Ahnjong was following them. Dae Jung got close to Yoon Shik and whispered in his ear, "Why is she following us?"

"I do not know," replied Yoon in a low voice. Dae Jung went to the left of Yoon on which side Ahnjong was walking by. Clearing his throat he asked, "Miss, do you also live near Yoon Shik's house? I mean why are you walking beside us?"

"What kind of questions are you asking? She is the daughter of the village headman," muttered Yoon Shik. Ahnjong had a tiny smile on her lips. "Ahh, I am sorry, Miss. But then I am curious why are you following us?" Dae Jung asked.

"I want to give this to Yoon Shik. The dress which he should wear for the event," Ahnjong said nervously in a low voice. Dae Jung smiled and told her that she could give them the dress. Ahnjong nodded and handed the cloth nag in which she had brought the dress. Yoon Shik did not want to take the dress but Dae Jung by then took the bag from her and told her that she should leave. Ahnjong nodded and left from there.

"Jung-aa, why did you take the dress from him?" Yoon Shik asked annoyingly.

"How could I refuse her? Do you thinking the same as I am?" Dae Jung asked with a smirk.

Yoon Shik started walking ignoring him. "That village headman's daughter likes you, right?" Dae Jung muttered. Yoon Shik glared at him and started walking fast for home. Dae Jung ran behind him and said, "Is this not good? You can get a good-"

"Jung-aa what are you saying? That girl annoys me a lot. I do not like such things at all," muttered Yoon Shik.

Dae Jung smiled. They reached Yoon's house. "But you have to wear this. What if your father has sent this?" Dae Jung asked, looking at the cloth bag in his hand. Yoon Shik grabbed the bag from him and walked towards the washroom. "You should get ready too," said Yoon and went into the washroom. Dae Jung too went to the house next to Yoon.

After 20 minutes, Yoon came out of his room. He was ready and looked at his dress. As he stepped down to the ground Dae Jung praised him. "This silk robe suits you," stated Dae Jung with a tiny smile. "You are also looking good. Let's go then," said Yoon. They both then left for the great ground where everyone was waiting for them.

In the ground, Hani was looking for Yoon Shik. "Unni (sister), where is Orabani? Why did you leave him behind? He might have stopped somewhere to help someone. I should have gone to fetch him," muttered Hani.

"Forgive me Hani. I thought he is uncomfortable around me," said Ahnjong.

"Unni, Orabani does not get uncomfortable around anyone. He knows you since childhood days," asserted Hani when her eyes fell on Yoon and Dae Jung who were coming that way. She ran to them. "Orabani, why did you take so long? I was searching up for you in the entire market. I am happy that you qualified for this exam," stated Hani with a smile.

"Thank you, Hani for always being with me. Sorry, I found my old friend and was with him," replied Yoon with a warm smile. Wan Dae Juk, who is the father of Dae Jung, told Shiwo to look at the kids. "They have grown so much. Yoon Shik made you proud today. I remember the day those two lost their mother and grandmother. You made a good decision of adopting them," said Dae Juk with a smile.

"You are right. They both are my world. Yoon Shik lost his entire childhood to achieve this dream. He not only made me proud but the entire village proud of him," asserted Jang Shiwo.

"Hani, do you not recall me?" Dae Jung inquired.

"Dae Jung Orabani, how could I not recall you? You broke my doll which was close to my heart," said Hani and then hit him at his shoulder. "Ahh, it is hurting," said Dae Jung and then started teasing her.

"Hani, do not hit Dae Jung. He is way older than you. You are grown up now," said Yoon Shik. Dae Jung smiled when Hani was scolded. "Orabani, let's go in as everyone is waiting for us," said Hani. As they were walking Hani told Yoon Shik that he was looking good in the new clothes. The people there gathered as Yoon Shik came there and started praising & congratulating him. The Village headman, Dong Hyun, came there.

"Yoon Shik, I am proud of you. You made all of us proud. Tomorrow his majesty has called us. He wants to bestow you with something big," asserted Dong Hyun. The whispers of people got aloud as it was a moment of happiness for all of them. "Yoon Shik has arrived so we should start the event. Yoon Shik, come with me," said Dong Hyun and took him to the stage which was prepared by them.

"Please all of you take your seats," said Dong Hyun to the villagers. All the people get seated on the mat placed in front of the stage to sit on it. "Yoon Shik, you should sit here. On this wooden chair," asserted Dong Hyun, gesturing towards the chair on which was decorated and seemed like used by rich people only.

"I qualified for this exam and they all started praising me. When my mother and grandmother died they all turned their faces away and now they are celebrating this," thought Yoon Shik. "Chonjang (Village headman), you have done so many special arrangements. It is unbelievable to me. I wish you could support me the day my mother and grandmother died," Yoon Shik said with sadness.

Dong Hyun looked at him and recalled the day when Yoon came to him the other day to help him in giving justice to his mother but he refused saying that there was no proof pointing that landlord was behind the murder of his mother and grandmother.

The people looked at him and lowered their eyes as they also did not help the kids. Jang Shiwo saw the hidden emotions of Yoon Shik which were coming out. He went to him and patted his shoulder to calm him down. Hani too looked at her brother and realized he was saying the truth. No one helped them the time they needed them the most.

"This celebration means nothing to me. It might be a big thing for you people but not for me because the murderer of my mother and grandmother is still alive and is roaming happily," muttered Yoon Shik.

"Yoon Shik, I know that we did not help you that time but trust me you had no proofs. I cannot accuse a person without any proof. Do not spoil your mood today. It is the last day of yours in the village so you should enjoy it," stated Dong Hyun softly. Jang Shiwo too agreed with him. Hani came forward and told Yoon Shik not to think about that day. The villagers there too came forward to apologize to him and at the same time told him not to be angry at such a good occasion.

Yoon looked at them and then apologized for his behavior. "I am missing them which made me angry at you. Please forgive me for my inappropriate behavior," said Yoon Shik with a bowed head.

"Yoon Shik, do not worry. We know your emotions flooded out today. You do not need to apologize. So, should we start the event then?" Dong Hyun asked. Yoon Shik nodded with a tiny smile on his lips.
