The Root

In a white room devoid of all life and spanning for a long distance, two elderly men are fighting. One in an all-black robe and a white belt with a big scythe and the other with a white kimono with black highlights and a long knight-like sword.

Life: "Wait! Wait! Wait!~ I felt a life on earth Get extinguished. Possibly due to our fight! PAUSE THE FIGHT."

Death: Quiet! You're just afraid of getting beaten by me again, you coward.

Life: Ah calm down you meat-head. This is a matter of life and death {AN: See what I did there haha}

Death: Well? What are you waiting for? Let's go investigate this disturbance you speak of.

A young man, not older than the age of 20, is seen walking, with his earbuds in listening to his favorite song. As he walks the earth starts to tremble. Most think it's an earthquake, but this is due to the God of Life's holy aura as he accidentally released it. Then it stops... he looks around for any danger as he's scanning the area.

To his side, there's a little girl and her mother. The mother is too distracted checking if her daughter is safe to see the impending wall of concrete. Suddenly his leg starts running. Going as fast as his legs can take him even being on the track team of his college he's not fast enough.

The boy tackles the mother-daughter duo in both hands pushing them out the way as his whole lower body gets crushed by the broken chunks of wall. The pain immediately starts rushing his nerves and he tries to contain his agony not to traumatize the little child beside him. He calls out to her. "Hey... kid..." the girl looks at her hero and while still tearing up she says, "Y-y-yes m-m-mister?"

"Don't.. cause your mom trouble and be a bad girl.. ok..? Do well in school and be kind... Okay?"

she nods her head while crying out "Okay m-mister" the pain starts getting to him little by little

then he starts fading out. Before hearing the crowd screeching "Emergency dispatch is here!" Is all he heard before slowly losing consciousness then hearing the wailing of the ambulance. Then the pain turns into nothingness and all he can see is black.

——— In the void ———

{First Person}

"Why is it so.... quiet..." thinking for a second in what I believe is the abyss, my life flashes before my eyes. 'I spent so much time watching anime and reading manga after I first discovered it I didn't really interact with anyone. In school, I had all A's and then relaxed. Being lonely in my life and In the abyss.' "Truly a terrible situation, but alas here we are. . ." I spoke out

After wondering for a bit I heard doors opening and I see two elderly men walkout. One giving off the aura of death and another exuding a holy aura. The same thing I felt before the earth started rumbling... Suddenly they spoke. Life: "Hello my child, truly an unfortunate situation you have been forced in. "

Death: "Indeed, I would like to explain your situation to you but first I want to know. . . Why did you save those two?"

'Why did I save those two..?' "Umm... I think I saved the mother and daughter because they remind me of my own family? My mom and my sister were very close until my dad died."

Death: "Very good answer."

Life: "Young one, the reason the "earthquake" started was because of me and Death over there were in a spar. I'm truly sorry and I know how you feel but please allow me to make it up to you."

"How are you gonna make it up to me?" I ask and both men have a smile on their faces like when your parents are proud of you. The God of Life says "Well, I could reincarnate you to a different world as your body has already died on Earth. Or you could go to what most of my children call "Heaven" unless.. you have other ideas?"

'This just really turned into a novel plot. The author is probably writing about me RIGHT now!'

Death starts chuckling in a corner Death: "HAHA kid you have a great sense of humor!" replying I say "Well, I try to entertain the people in my head the best I can!" I say with an astral smirk on my body. Death in a loud burst of laughter says "I like you child! If you ever become a god remember to visit alright!?" Smiling in my soul form I say "Of course!" and then...

*cough* "Can we please get back to business? please..?" Life says in a slightly lower voice.

"So umm I'd like to go with reincarnation, Is it alright If I pick the world? And since you guys killed me and probably many more I would like you to fulfill a couple request.

"Life says "Well, of course, we'll have to compensate you. You have 3 wishes from me and 5 from Death as he says "because you made him laugh."

"Okay, I would like to state my wishes now if that's okay..."
