The Painted

Ever since I remember I have always been intrigued by antiquated places. The kind of places that are abandoned with no trace of the human touch yet are crowded by the shadows of the past. The ancientness, the haunting yet captivating stillness that is shrouded in mystery has always called to me. The distant voice that sounds deceptively familiar echoes in the hallways travelling room to room with every intention of being heard and so I followed the echo taking me home. To a place that I have spent decades living in and yet don’t know how to find. It belongs to the deepest and darkest corner of my mind. To a place that is secluded from everyone like a hidden treasure in the heart of a majestic mountain or a lost shrine of an ancient and forgotten God, a place that I cannot enter yet know of its existence or at least I thought I could not until that morning…

The Mysterious Man

The person stepping out was a man who had his back turned towards me but there was no doubt that he had an overwhelmingly powerful aura surrounding him.

His whole attire which consisted of a black suit and matching black shiny shoes screamed rich, extremely rich.

'Damn, I think the child kidnapping business is good' I thought to myself.

The girl just like myself seemed to be in a state of confusion,

even though I couldn't see her face properly due to the lingering fog but something about her seemed very familiar,

I couldn't pinpoint which part of her appearance invoked that feeling in me.

As the rich man stood in front of the child, he gave me a better view of his side profile.

He was definitely in his late thirties from what I could gather and seemed calmer and more collected than the previous guy.

I slowly started to get closer to the group when I noticed that the man was now talking,

either very quietly or I was turning deaf because I couldn't hear anything even though I was only a few steps away from him.

His lips were moving very fast indicating he was probably in a rush.

'Of course, he has to get to the other kids, he can't spend the whole day on one child' I thought.

I was trying very intently to listen to their conversation when I heard another voice in the distance.

The sound of a person or perhaps a group of people talking could be faintly heard.

'Are they looking for the child? Are they coming to save her?'

I thought happily while looking around, but I couldn't see anyone in the visible distance.

'I'm sure they're close by' I reassured myself.

'Perhaps I don't have to do anything after all' I relaxed and brought down the shoe I held in my hand as my one and only weapon,

a dangerous one as well if thrown hard enough.

The voices of people talking only grew louder, yet there was still no one in sight and when I looked back towards the group,

I noticed that the man looked visibly angry now and was getting closer to the girl which caused me a sudden panic.

'I have to do something!' I thought urgently before I picked up my shoe again.

I looked around and noticed the driver was now in the car and turning on the engine, ready to escape, I assumed.

'I have to stop them! this can't happen. I have to do something.'

I quickly stepped behind the man in a suit and placed my hand on his shoulder.

The moment he started to turn around I suddenly experienced a terrible headache.

'I think my head is about to explode!'. I stepped back and groaned in pain while holding onto my head and my eyes grew teary.

In an attempt to see better I started blinking repeatedly yet there was no use because now I was experiencing a panic attack.

There was a tightness in my chest which was slowly turning into pain, and I was feeling an overwhelming sense of dread.

'Great, on top of being blind and deaf I can't breathe now, it can't get any worse than this!' I thought to myself.

I slowly sat on the cold gravel road and hugged my legs while placing my head on my knees and shutting my eyes tightly before attempting to hum a familiar melody in order to calm down.
