BOARD OF PREFECTS

It was a new academic session, everyone is entering a new class so it was a thing of joy.

On the first day of school, everyone is seen at the assembly hall and that term the principal decided to hold an assembly. After worship, praise, and prayer, the principal came up for the announcement.

"Welcome back staff and students of L. H. A, I'm pleased to have you all here hail and healthy. You all know this is the first term and you all will be entering a new class for those who were promoted.

This term we'll be electing new positions for the Board of Prefects among the SS3 students. By 2nd-week voting form will be applicable to all students and vote wisely. Thought the student's vote amounts to only 50%. By 2nd week we'll call out the nominees for each category.

Be on your best behavior this term, as usual, we are not tolerating any nuisance from any students. You may all go to your class which I believe has been shown to you before this assembly, thank you" the principal said and everyone clapped then they all went to class.

The SS3 students got to class and sat down in their respective seats. They had already chosen a seat for themselves before the assembly. Shelly and John were seated in the same seat. Rita and Stella as usual were seated at the back of Shelly and John. Immediately they settled down their Government teacher entered the class as that was their first lesson for the day.

In science class, Joan and Peter sat together. When everyone welcomed each other their physics teacher entered the class and they began their first lesson for the day.

When they had a free period last period to break, they were told to go to the library which they did without asking why. Everyone was at the library reading and discussing but no one dared to make noise.

"So how do you all see the principal's announcement in today's assembly," Rita asked them. "It was good," everyone said nodding their head. "So who do you think will be the head prefect which is the highest position in the board of prefects,," Joan asked.

"John!" everyone chorused. "Wow, I didn't expect that," Joan said. "What about deputy head prefect,," Peter asked. "Shelly!" everyone chorused. "I fit the criteria but I would also fit library prefect," Shelly said. "No! no! no! you won't, if you are the library prefect you would allow everyone to bring snacks in here" John said and everyone laughed.

"Please keep it down so that the librarian would not throw us out," Joan said. "You're right, keep it down," Peter said. "Did you have to say it again?" Rita said and they continued to read.

The next week the nomination for various positions was announced and the voting form was available so voting started immediately. Shelly and John were returning from the principal's office in the afternoon after the break on a Tuesday when some group of junior students stopped them.

"How can we help you?" Shelly asked. "We just came to let you know that we'll vote for you two," a girl said. "Yes" they all chorused in unison. "okay, thank you. What is your name?" Shelly asked the girl that first spoke. "Deborah" she answered. "Okay, Deborah would you like to be our campaign manager in your class," Shelly asked. "Yes senior" she answered.

"Then spread the news, tell all your classmate to vote for us and there'll be a reward for that" Shelly said. "Yes! senior" she said happily. "The rest of you, you can do the same" Shelly said and they were all happy. "Thank you senior" they chorused and went away.

"Those Juniors," John said as they were walking to class. "I love them," Shelly said. "They are so nice," he said. "Yes, and by the way, Christian said I should extend his greetings to you," Shelly said.

"Oh, I almost forgot about him, how is he doing," he asked. "He's okay he just got admission into college" she answered. "Which college," he asked. "Portal Of Life (POL) university" she answered.

How did he, POL is one of the top universities in this land" he asked. "He worked his way through, he was given a scholarship" she answered. "His hard work has finally sealed through, I'm happy for him," he said. "Me too," Shelly said and the discussion continued.

They got to class, then stood in front of the class. "Attention everyone," John said and they all looked at him. "The principal wants to see all the nominees now, he is in his office and he's waiting for you," John said and all the nominees stood up and left.

Shelly and John went to science class and made the same announcement and also in social science and all other classes in SS3. The nomination was from all the sets of classes in SS3.

They gathered at the assembly hall and the principal lectured them about each role. He told them what they are expected to do and what they should not do. He told them they are there to bring orderliness to the school and also they can issue punishment when necessary.

He told them that they were allowed to campaign throughout that week because voting was ending that week and the result would be announced the next week Monday. After the long Speech, he dismissed them. That week became campaign week and everything went well. On Friday voting ended and at that point, every one of the nominees prayed in their hearts.

The next Monday everyone was in school early because they would be announcing the position of each student on the board of prefects in the morning assembly. Everyone was gathered in the hall and after all, was said and done, it was time for them to announce the students for the position on the board of prefects.

"Silence," the principal said, and everywhere was quiet. "If you hear your name, you'll come on stage. The proprietor and the board of directors have agreed for the people that would be coming on stage as prefects please respect them as you respect the authorities, is that clear" the principal said. "Yes sir!" they chorused.

"For head prefect let's welcome John Williams," the principal said and everyone cheered and he went on stage. "For deputy head prefect let's welcome Shelly Bill," he said and the cheering increased.

Rita was put as the disciplinary prefect, followed by Peter who was the library prefect, Joan was the assembly prefect and Fred was the sports prefect, then Stella was the club prefect while Fiona was the sanitary prefect and they all had their assistant.

They all lined up and everyone continued to clap and shout. "Staff and students of L. H. A. These are your board of prefects, please respect them," the principal said and everyone was happy and they were all dismissed.
