Chapter 3

My eyes had adjusted to the night,and I could make out her large,moon-rimmed outline under the wide umbrella of the protective tree limbs.She was beautiful!She held her proud head high on her slender shaggy neck.A rough rope halter hung loose around her poll and nose,and the remains of a tether dangled.Her huge eyes were half-closed as she contentedly chewed the cud.I tiptoed forward,trying not to make the slightest noise,but the dead leaves rustled under my hesitant footsteps.I held my breath.Her eyelids fluttered their long lashes towards me.

Any second now,she’s going to get up and run away and the magic will be over,I thought.

Yet all she did was blink and look at me with curiosity.

I was mesmerized.Did I dare go closer?Would she tolerate it?
