The two of us were new to these people,who came from all over Europe.Huntley had often been invited to their functions,but had never managed to squeeze in the time to attend.Consequently he found the Camel Affair useful as an ice-breaker.In the coach to our restaurant—the Têtedoie by the Sa?ne River—he directed the question“Do you know what my wife claims to have seen?”to a Dutch man and his wife across the aisle,succeeded by“she’s such an animal lover—if her horses and dogs can’t be with her she’ll dream some creature up!”

Luckily not everyone was as cynical about my camel sighting.The others were fascinated and wondered where it was hiding.What would it find to eat in the city?
