Chapter 19: Perfect Day

There are a lot of things a person can get used to walking up to. Birds singing on a windowsill, the smell of fresh coffee, the crackle of sizzling bacon.

For me, waking up with Robin was something I quickly got used to. His warmth, the feel of his arms wrapped firmly but gently around me. By the time I was awake enough to notice these things, Robin would have already woken up, and he would give me another wakeup call with a kiss on the forehead.

This morning our routine was interrupted; I was the first to wake up.

As gently as I could, I untangled myself from Robin’s embrace and shuffled up until our faces were only an inch apart. He looked so peaceful, my beautiful gentle giant. Someone who would protect me from any danger.

Like those lingering feelings Felix had left me with.

I reached out and stroked Robin’s cheek, feeling his stubble against my palm and fingertips. He stirred at my touch and his eyelids fluttered open. “Jessica …”
