The Lonely Witch and the Sun

There once was a witch that lived on a hill. No one was around or anywhere near. Aside from her mother, who had long ago passed away, she had never met another person.

The little lonely witch with her short raven hair and bright blue eyes wished everyday to meet someone so she would no longer be lonely. However it seemed that it wasn't meant to be, so she went on and did her same routine everyday.

She would start the day by tending to the garden. Then she'd make her potions and go outside to practice her spells. After that she would stop by the river and wash her clothes and draw water for her bath. Once she finished bathing she would go to sleep and start again. Everyday the same thing, again and again.

One day while making her potions she noticed she was out of an herb. She went to fetch more from her garden, but it seemed the garden had none as well.

"How odd" she though as she looked around the garden. Not having any luck finding the herb the little witch decided only one thing could be done, she would have to go into the forest.

She distinctly disliked the forest, for it was dark, dim and damp, the worst three "d's" a place could be. So she never went far in and always quickly ran out.

As she went into the forest this time she still felt the same and the deeper she went in the worst it became.

She felt as though she was being watched and the sound of her foot steps echoed around. The further she got the more scared she became until she was lost. Being lost and scared and all alone the little witch broke down and started to cry. The little witch cried until she saw a shimmer of light out of the corner of her eye.

She walked towards the light until she stood in front of what she found to be quiet an odd sight. It was a small boy with a round soft face and chubby cheeks. The witch was confused with what he could be. She thought and thought and thought. She poked his cheeks and smelled his hair. She stared at him without blinking until her eyes began to water.

With all her observations she only found one answer that made sense, he must be the sun!

He seemed to shine in the light and he smelt of summer, his golden hair glimmered and his tanned skin was warm to the touch. If not the sun what else could he be!

The witch was quite excited.

"The sun must have come down because he heard my wishes." She thought

In this dark, damp forest the sun was the only thing the witch had to keep herself from being scared. She look at the sun more and realized that his leg was hurt.

"It must be a pretty far trip from the sky to the earth. No wonder he got hurt." The witch decided she must help heal him and so she picked him up and tried to find her way out of the forest.

The sun was small but the witch was smaller so she had a hard time. She had to stop every few steps and she fell many times but she kept moving on. On the way she found her herb, so she stopes and picked it. Looking at the Suns injuries she turned back and picked a bit more.

"These will be helpful in fixing his leg." She thought to herself.

With her task accomplished and the Sun once again on her back she continued to search for a way out of the forest. As she traveled it got darker and darker but eventually she found her way out. Covered in mud and scratches the little witch carried the boy up the hill in the middle of the night and into her home.

She washed the boys wounds and made the medicine he needed using the herb. After that she bandaged him up. Finally she wiped the mud and dirt off him and let him sleep on her bed. From then on she waited. Sitting on a chair right next to the beds edge the little witch watched her Sun and waited for him to wake up. She waited and waited until her eyes got drowsy and her head heavy. Then slowly she fell asleep. She dreamed a wonderful dream full of laughter and sunshine before waking up to the morning heat brushing against her skin.

The little witch looked around the room in search of the sun but couldn't find him anywhere. Then she looked outside and up in the sky she saw the sun where it normally was.

"Oh right the sun needs to be in the sky during the day to make light." She thought "I'm sure he'll be back to visit tonight!"

The witch went about her day preparing for the sun to visit once it became night. She worked hard and made a big meal for dinner. She cleaned the house and set up the dishes for her guest. Then she waited while staring at the sky.

It was late at night and the sun had long set but still the boy was no where in sight. Even so the little witch continued to wait. She waited until the sun began to rise the next day. Once the sun hung high in the sky the realization that he wouldn't come to visit began to set in. But still the little witch had hope, so she waited night after night for the sun to come visit. Every time setting up dishes and making a meal for two.

After months had passed the witch finally lost the last bit of hope she had hung on to and began to cry. She cried for days on end, until her eyes were puffy and her nose bright red. She cried until she lost her voice and got herself sick. The little witch had always been lonely but having the hope of her loneliness finally being cured and then having that hope torn up before her eyes made her feel lonelier than she had ever felt before. The little witch was truly very lonely.
