Chapter 13

After they finished eating, they were heading out when Leo heard Dock call his name.

Both Leo and Ollie turned to see Dock leaning on a white birch tree that grew a few feet from the left side of the restaurant. There was a woman with him, helping him shuck corn. Leo looked at Ollie, who shrugged and headed towards the car.

Leo didn’t move until Dock called his name again, then smiled at the woman and headed over to Leo.

“You enjoy your lunch?” he called out as he walked, a wide grin still on his face. Leo felt his stomach lurch. He thought he might actually throw up, but swallowed hard to stop the urge. Wouldn’t that be a kick, he thought, puking up Dock’s food right in front of him?

“It was good,” he said, his voice almost cracking.

“Yeah,” Dock replied, his eyes looking him up and down. “I’m glad.”

“You couldn’t tell?” Leo answered with more sarcasm than he actually felt.
