The Thirteenth Daughter
Mornings spent in one-on-one classes, evenings spent crying herself to sleep; Celeste lived her life surrounded by people, yet alone. From the day she was born, the laws of her faith chose her to be a sacrificial lamb. Each day is a day closer to her ceremonial execution. Her 13th birthday.
Celeste is the thirteenth child of her father, the King. The religion of their kingdom dates back centuries, overseeing bloody, unfair beliefs that serve to appease twin goddesses. Celeste's royal blood is sacred, but marked for the taking by her place amongst her elder sisters. She is the thirteenth daughter of the King. She must die to keep the universe at peace, to satisfy the goddesses.
Yet, even after a lifetime of being taught she was born to die, Celeste can not bring herself to gather the courage to face her oncoming death. She's got to escape. She knows she does. But how can she, when everyone around her is convinced they'll lose their own lives if they don't take hers?
