How to Save a Life

Ivy stands next to Hunt as Mark comes running out to the ambulance bay, "What the hell happened?"

"Car versus truck. Thats all we know," Owen tells him.

"And her injuries? What- the baby?" Mark has trouble getting it out.

Ivy looks at him sadly as her brother answers, "We don't know yet."

Mark turns to him, almost as if he has no control over his body right now, "Well, why the-why the hell don't you know? Someone get me a trauma gown."

Webber looks at him, "Mark, you need to sit this one out."

"I'm not sitting this one out. That's Callie. That's my kid," Mark argues.

Webber looks to Ivy for help, knowing she's one of the few who could calm him down right now. She nods, stepping forward.

"Mark."

"Ivy, that's my family. I need to help them," he pleads, turning to her.

She takes a breath, sharing a look with Derek to gather courage and then, "Mark, if you don't calm down and focus right now, you aren't going to be let into the trauma room or the O.R. So you need to relax or I will physically keep you out of the room. And you know I should be with her instead."

"I'm in the room," he says as the ambulance approaches.

Webber nods, "Hunt, you're in charge."

They rush forward as Owen calls out, "Ivy, you're my right hand on this one. All right, everyone. Mulitple blunt trauma protocol. Let's go."

Arizona steps out, listing stats, "Tachycardic and hypotensive en route. Obvious head and chest injuries."

"Callie? Callie. We've got you, you hear me? Everything is going to be okay, I just need you to stay with me, okay?" Ivy says, using her patient voice.

"Shes hemorrhaging," Meredith calls out.

"Wait. Hold on. Is that blood coming from her chest?" Teddy asks as everyone looks over Callie.

"What?"

Callie turns to Ivy and tries to talk around all the blood in her mouth, "Calliope means... means music."

Ivy focuses on the task at hand, falling back into her trauma surgeon ways and hiding the pains he's feeling. This is her family too. Her mentor, her friend. Her God child.

"We're gonna fix you up. Okay? You stay with us."

"She went through the windshield."

Ivy looks up, "Seattle belt? Airbags?"

"She took it off."

"How are her vitals?"

Roy shares, "Last one was 80 over palp."

'

Arizona adds, "She lost a lot of blood, too."

"Make sure she gets lots of fluids," Owen tells her.

Derek goes to her eyes, "Callie, can you blink for me?"

"Extraocular movement intact."

"Pupils equal and reactive."

"Set up a chest tray."

Ivy calls out, "Lets go, come on."

They start pushing Callie into a trauma room as Fields gets the fetal monitor ready.

"Callie. I need you to stay with me. I need my kickass ortho goddess mentor. Don't leave me with Hunt as my only option."

"One, two, three," Owen counts as they left Callie onto a bed.

"Get those I.V.s up."

"And make sure her lines are patent."

Derek calls, "Depressed skull fracture with a probable bleed."

Jackson says, "I'll do a trauma ultrasound."

Everyone starts talking over each other. Arizona is asking for a fetal heartbeat in which Lucy is trying to find but can't hear over all the noise. Finally, Ivy yells, "Quiet! Just one second so Lucy can get a heartbeat sound. Please."

They all continue working but stops shouting. They wait a second until they hear it, "There it is. Fetal heartbeat."

Ivy feels her body release some tension and looks at Owen, "I'll apologize later. V-fib!"

"Shes crashing."

"Start bagging her."

"Come on. Get her on her back."

Ivy calls, "Starting CPR."

Derek yells, "Okay, get me an intubation tray, please. Ready to intubate. Hold in-line stabilization."

"I've got cricoid pressure for you."

"Charging to 120. Clear," Ivy immediately backs away from Callie.

"Still in v-fib."

Charge the paddles to 200."

"Charged to 200. Clear."

They all look at the monitor. '

"Sinus tach. Shes back," Ivy calls.

"Get the ambu on."

"Lets move," Owen yells.

Derek tells everyone, "Here we go. Everybody, ready? Grab that. Grab it."

They start moving her to the O.R. Ivy quickly gets in the elevator and stands  in between Webber and Derek. She watches the numbers on the elevator like a hawk. She feels Derek grab her hand and squeeze in silent support. She squeezes back with a small smile.

Ivys scrubbed in and prepping Callie, "C.T. shows a large epidural and subdural. I need to get in there. Is she under?"

"We're ready for you."

Derek nods, "All right. I'm going in. I need a 10-blade. Bipolar to Dr. Grey."

"Bovie," Bailey asks for as Ivy hands it to her.

Lexie calls out, "Wait. Wait. Stop. Her anesthesias too light."

Knox stands up, "Oh, I can fix that."

"Oh, my God."
