FRESH AIR

"Ngozi, I know who I am referring to you. I promise you that you will like her." Mr Peter cried out over the phone to her elder sister.

"No, no, no! Please find someone else, otherwise I will ask Dike to come for a stay preferably." She answered vehemently.

"Do you even know Dike at all? Dike has gone worse from the little sense he had left in him. He would rather turn your house into a den of thieves and drug addicts.

Can you trust me this once? In the first place, you know I can't order for someone that would bring you harm. Forget that Tabitha is a single mother..."

"I don't know much about single mothers, but I had a friend like that who was all of a hell. So are you saying I will be welcoming a young lady with her daughter into my house for a stay?"

"Well, that I don't know. If you are not okay with her going in with the little girl, I can have her stay back with us meanwhile her mother goes to Abuja. But remember, your vacation would take up to a year plus, do you expect just her to stay in that large mansion? Why not allow her and her daughter, so that she can have an accompaniment? That would prevent any thought of her longing to bring people in to keep her companied." Mr Peter persuaded.

"Okay, fine! I think I am convinced enough, but let me still speak with my husband about it. I will give you a call latter on in the evening." She said and both hung the call.

"Mommy Vic, tell Tabitha to get ready. She is going to Abuja. My sister can be a bit difficult atimes. Will I be referring the wrong person to her? I can't leave my investment here heading to Abuja to stay, mama is too old for that ..." He thundered.

"Daddy, just calm down. You know this hot blood runs in the family." Mrs Peter said, mocking jokingly.

"What do you mean?" He asked her with a funny look.

"Nothing o." She said, both laughing.

As Mr Peter turned, it was her sister calling again. He hesitated a little and picked.

"Erh, Peter, you know I just want to be careful. Please, so what do we do next?" She asked.

"You have nothing to be worried about sister. You will send her money for transportation." He affirmed.

"Yes, yes, that's necessary. Please, I don't know if five hundred thousand would be enough. She should book flight for Wednesday and have herself prepared for the journey. You will take Two hundred for your wife and my baby girl." She established.

"How about me?"

"Come on, I sent you money last week. But don't worry, I had in mind to send you one of my cars before I travel. My driver will travel down with it for you." She told Peter excitedly, causing him to dance as he broke the news to his wife.

"Oya, oya, hurry and tell Tabitha to come. This is a great news for all of us." He hastened his wife who ran and called on the attention of Tabitha.

"Tabitha, you are going for Abuja on Wednesday. I will give you some money, latest tomorrow to make preparation for flight ticket and every other thing.

But," He held her and brought her close. "I want this to be a little secret. Don't tell anyone in this compound. I will answer them when they come asking, after you must have gone."

"Alright sir. I don't know how exactly to thank God of heaven and earth for you and your wife. I now believe without doubt that destiny helpers are real and God makes everything beautiful in his time. I can't wait to be in Abuja, ah, me of all people." She praised God.

"And, incase you are asking whether you will be traveling with your daughter, the answer is yes. Joy will be going with you." Mrs Peter capped the cake with some ice.

Well, Tabitha couldn't find the best way to express her joy. It was a moment of jollification in her life.

Four days had exactly passed with neighbors asking about the whereabout of Tabitha who seemed to be missing.

Her travel came to the notice of a few who saw her and Mr Peter leaving for the airport early Wednesday morning.

it came to be that on the Saturday of that same week, the landlord was in the early hours of the day with some youths.

Mr Peter was outside getting ready for work when he called him and engaged him in a talk.

"...Mr Peter, you see, I don't like it when some of my tenants proof difficult. I gave this young lady several options to remain a tenant in my house, but it is obvious she don't want to stay."

"But landlord, why are you telling me this? You have taken your decision." Mr Peter said.

"I am telling you because by the time I do what I am here to do, some of you would begin to say things against my action." He answered.

"Well, Mr landlord, let me save you from a little waste of time. For your information, Tabitha and her daughter are no longer your tenants. She has packed out."

"Packed? To where?" He asked.

"To Abuja. Maybe next time you call her asking to marry you, you would have to visit Abuja to pay her bride price. Why do some of you elderly men lack self respect. I know everything you demanded of her landlord. Please, I have to be off for work." He said and dust the water off his hands, and vanished into his room, living the landlord dumped.

When he opened the door, he met it empty and void of a living creature, except for some insects jumping around in celebration of Independence.

"This young girl." He said, and moved away angrily, his boys after him.

Money changes. It does Tabitha within days.

Her first time in an airplane was experienced in luxury.

As she sat dreaming in the piece of craft with her daughter, she dreamed endlessly, how in a little time things had really changed for her.

She wondered how life was going to be for her in the country's capital, her daughter's education and what happens when Mr Peter's sister's vacation had ended.

She also tried hard to figure out what sort of a woman Ngozi would be. Maybe as kind as Mr Peter could be, but maybe as rash as the other side of him could also be.

This thoughts caused her to mutter prayers constantly until it was announced that they were in Abuja.

About thirty minutes later, the driver picked her and her daughter from the airport, in an exquisite Sport Utility Car.

The ride was a great blessing to her as she tour round the beautiful hills of the federal capital territory.
