But Gideon was the one who picked up the paper and slid it across the table toward Jesse. And it was the way Gideon’s dark eyes locked with his that drew Jesse back into the room.

“You need to read that.”

Jesse read the article Gideon pointed at with a deepening frown. Once he reached the bottom of article, he started over again. And then read it a third time. A body had been discovered in Central Park, which wasn’t unheard of. But the details were grotesquely bizarre.

“Mauled by a bear?”

“They found it right by where we were walking yesterday,” Emma said.

Gideon’s mouth was tight. “Someone at that art installation thing discovered the body. How well do you know this friend of Michelle’s who invited you guys?”

“Not very.” Which was the truth. Mostly. He didn’t elaborate. “Are you thinking something a bit more supernatural than a bear?”

“How many bears do you think wander through traffic in New York City?”
