The love he knew he’d never be able to hide—would never want to—flooded between them, drawing a smile to Emma’s swollen mouth. Before she spoke, though, the vampire in question’s heavy footsteps interrupted the moment, and they looked up to see Gideon frowning as he approached the stove.

“Don’t tell me it’s possible for both of you to not realize the meat is burning.” He reached past Emma and picked up the spatula, poking at the sausage in order to turn it over in the frying pan. “How the hell you two managed to feed yourselves before I came along, I’ll never know.”

“Well, thank God you’re here now.” He gently pulled Emma toward the door and smiled wryly. “We’ll just get out of your hair so we don’t find a way to spoil the whole meal.” Once they were in the living room again, Jesse released Emma’s hand. “Why don’t you pour the wine? I’ll be right back.”
