Chapter 55

“What is he cooking in there?” Emma asked softly.

“I don’t know. He just shooed me out of the kitchen with this.” Jesse held up the bottle of wine.

But Jesse didn’t mind being sent out of the kitchen. He wanted to talk to Gideon, but he understood the chance wasn’t going to come that night. Jesse was just pulling the cork out of the wine bottle when Gideon’s phone started to ring, audible even though it was still in the bedroom.

“Do you have to answer that?”

Jesse nodded. “Gideon doesn’t get a lot of social calls, you know?”

He recognized the number at a glance, and his heart jumped. He tried to tell himself it was just Derek. Nothing to be excited about. But Derek was a potential rich source of information, and he didn’t even know it. And he probably wouldn’t be quite so reticent to answer a few questions about his own father. But instead of answering the phone with a question on his lips, he merely carried it into the kitchen for Gideon.
