“Did he have other plans for us or something?”

“No. No explanation offered. Not for lack of trying.”

“Oh.” She paused. “Do you want me to go try talking to him?”

“No. If Gideon had any intention of explaining himself, he would have. I’d rather you not get in the middle of this.”

“Okay.” She laid her cheek on his shoulder, her breath warm and soothing. “So what are you going to do?”

Jesse took a deep breath. “Try to get some sleep.” Which wasn’t a possibility at all. “Because we’re going to have a long day tomorrow in Central Park.”

“Please stop screaming, Simone. Nobody can hear you, and I’m trying to concentrate here,” Marcus said, unbuttoning his collar.

But she kept carrying on like she hadn’t heard him at all, each scream piercing his sensitive ears. Normally, he didn’t mind if they screamed, but it felt like she was making his entire brain vibrate.
