Chapter 45

“A party in Central Park tomorrow afternoon.” Jesse took a deep breath, hoping to steady his nerves for the lie. “One of Michelle’s friends here gave it to me.”

“That sounds like fun. Hopefully, the weather will hold for you.” The tap turned off and Gideon reappeared in the doorway, wiping his mouth. “What kind of party?”

“I don’t know. I guess we get to drink champagne and meet the artist and get a front row seat when they finally pull the curtain open, or whatever it is they do.” Jesse held the invitation out for Gideon to see. “I thought Emma would enjoy it.”

At first, he didn’t think Gideon was even going to look at it. He took it from Jesse’s fingers almost distractedly, holding it by the corner to glance down at the embossed lettering. But something almost immediately caught his eye, and what started out as a quick perusal turned into a deliberate read. Complete with Gideon’s darkest frown.
