Chapter 15

The night was clear when he rushed out onto the empty sidewalk, but the sounds from the alley said exactly where Gideon had gone. Jesse rushed to the mouth, just in time to see Gideon tearing a burly vampire off the shrieking form of a small brunette. Another man hovered nearby, his features indiscernible in the shadows. He caught the woman when she scrambled free, but Gideon was too caught up in fighting the attacker to notice.

The vampire was surprisingly quick on its feet, and it eluded Gideon each time he made a move to knock him down. Jesse cast his eyes around the narrow alley, and found a wooden produce crate. He hurried over to it, his gaze darting from Gideon to the brunette huddled next to the man who didn’t make a move to help Gideon. He wasn’t even making a move to run. In fact, he was watching the whole thing like it was the night’s free entertainment.

Jesse smashed the crate with a well-placed kick, sending it into several smaller pieces.
