Part 53: Still

I hugged my pillow tight as I remembered years ago. I asked Harvey during the lowest day of my life if he was a siren. He said he wasn't. He said he was human and that he'll never lie to me about that.

Tears just flow down my face and my eyes were trying to burn from all the tears. My thoughts were full of Harvey. My mind was clouded, knowing that I'm with someone that has hidden maybe even more information about him that I had never known or lied to me about.

I closed my eyes shut and hug the pillow tighter as the bedroom door slowly creaked open.

The end of the bed dipped and a hand was placed over my back. I tried to stay silent, trying not to show more vulnerability than I've already had to him.

He picked me up and hugged me. His warmth made me sob. He was home and he was my comfort. I can't even try to hide my disappointment.

"Caroline...look at me." He knows that I can't look at people's eyes when I'm too upset. I try to look at him but failed. "I know I did you wrong, my love. Please look at me. Hit me if you want." The hurt in his voice made my heart stop. It was making me sadder.

I started to try and look at his face. His hair is still white. I looked at his lips, then at his nose. When I looked into his eyes, still glowing with a purple hue, I cried again.

I sobbed. "I'm sorry...I can't."

Why am I even apologizing? I was lied to...but maybe it was my mistake? Maybe I was not reliable enough to be trusted. Maybe I was the one who was wrong all the time.

Harvey shushed me and rubbed my cheek. He looked into my eyes with sadness and tears started to flow more and more. "Please don't say that. I'm the one who should be sorry." He wiped my tears away and leaned over, his forehead leaning into mine.

I shook my head, pushing him away. "No...I wasn't trustworthy enough..." I sobbed. "I was overreacting."

I looked into Harvey's eyes and it broke me. "No. It's my fault." He quickly enveloped me into a tight hug. "Please don't leave me." He whispered. My eyes widened. I never dreamed of ever leaving him. Never.

"I won't ever want to leave you, Harvey." I whispered.

I was caught off guard when he started to rock his body with me. He was muttering over and over "Don't leave me...don't leave me...don't leave me." My heart fell at his words.

I think I made him go into shock. I never knew I'd trigger a trauma, especially Harvey's.

I gently patted Harvey's back and hugged him tightly. "I'm not going anywhere, Harvey. I'm here." I whispered. "I won't ever leave you." I said, placing butterfly kisses on his cheek.

I pulled away to see him panicking, his purple eyes glow with so much sadness and he started to talk quickly. "Don't leave. I promise to tell you everything. I will never hide anything from you ever again. Just please don't leave me-"

I leaned in and kissed him.

The night lasted for so long. The light of the moon was the only guiding light through the night. As the sound of the crickets and the frogs drown out the frightening sounds of the night, the wolves howl mistakenly from the monstrous noise of the king of the sea.

No one ever saw his face except for me. Perhaps I will never know who he really is but nature reacted when he said my name with sadness.
