Why?

"Moon?"

Moon woke up. For a second she wondered who was calling her name.

"Moon?"

She recognized the voice. It was Serena. Moon got up and looked at the clock.

8:00 pm

Did she sleep the whole day away? I guess so. She put on her cardigan robe, brushed her hair, and went down the stairs.

When she arrived to where Serena was, she saw Pierre. What was Pierre doing here? He never stepped foot in this house?

"Pierre, what are you doing here?"

Pierre was comforting Serena, Serena was looking down at the floor, as if she has little purpose to live. Pierre nudged Serena.

"Should we tell her?"

"Tell me what? Something happened? What happened?"

Serena recollected herself and looked at Pierre.

"I'll tell her."

She breathed in deeply.

"Something happened to Lionel."

Moon started to shake and her eyes started to get teary.

"What do you mean?"

"Moon, Pierre is going to be staying with us from now on."

"What? Why? Doesn't Lionel keep us safe?"

"It's for your own safety Moon, I promise I will keep you safe and I promise that at least one set of eyes will be on you to keep you safe."

"B-b-bu. Where's Lionel? Lionel has to be here. I know he will. Serena, you say something has happened to Lionel all the time. He is going to come back, he will come back. I know what Lionel does. He's going to walk through that door like nothing has happened. He'll give you a kiss and bridal style carry me. He is going to come back, I KNOW it!"

Serena was shaking her head at Moon.

"W-w-wh-wha-what do you mean?"

"Lionel is dead."

The news went through Moon like a bullet. She started to bawl almost instantly.

"It can't be, it can't be!"

"Moon, we were all upset for a day or two..."

"A day or two? A DAY OR TWO? He was a very special part of my life! He AND Serena helped me from my wicked mother. I treated him AS IF HE WERE MY REAL DAD! AND YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT I'LL GET OVER IT AFTER A DAY OR TWO?! I DON'T THINK I EVER WILL!"

Moon was crying so hard that her voice was getting hard to understand and she needed to breathe every second she could.

"You do-do-do-do-do-do-don-don't un-un-un-un-un-un-un-und."

Trying to say what she wanted hurt Moon even more. Questions were going through Moon's mind, she looked down at the floor, recollected herself, and asked the questions off the top of her mind to Pierre.

"How did he get killed?"

"The garçons and the Chicos arranged to have a fight in the forest of Salies-du-Salut. He stabbed Fernando, the leader of the Chicos before another chico stabbed him in the heart. I can kind of remember what he looks like, I think I know his name, I'm not sure."

A Chico, one of Santiago's gang members. Moon filled up with rage and she wanted to get her hands on this Chico and slaughter him just like they did to Lionel.

"What did you do at the fight?"

"Lionel dropped his knife and I picked it up for him, I made eye contact with one of the Chicos, but he did nothing, it wasn't him, I'm trying to remember what his name was."

"Why did Lionel kill Fernando?"

"We all know Lionel, and Lionel would never even hurt a bee. He didn't want to do it, and filled with regret instantly, he looked down at the ground."

The Lionel that Pierre was describing wasn't the Lionel that she knew, the Lionel she knew was like a dad, a fun dad and a caring person. Outside of the house, Lionel was a gang leader and a murderer? Moon couldn't believe this, but still asked questions.

"Why are there gangs and why do they fight?"

"The garçons are not a gang, don't ever refer to them as a gang. The Chicos are a gang, they think that they rule France when they illegally came here. We fight due to our many differences, and this was the worst brawl we have ever faced or seen."

Moon had one last question, one last question that could change everything. She let it slip off the tip of her tongue.

"Which Chico killed Lionel?"

"Santiago."

Santiago. No, it can't be. Santiago would never. Never in a million years. He was a sweetheart, he never wanted to be a chico, he would never steal, lie, or kill anything. Moon started to cry again and let any word fly out of her mouth.

"I don't believe you."

"Moon, Pierre is...."

"Pierre is what? Throwing lies into my heart? Santiago would never kill anything and he IS NOT A CHICO! I would believe Santiago over Pierre ANY DAY!"

"Moon..."

"No Pierre, I would NEVER EVER MARRY YOU! YOU HAVE NO EMOTIONS! SANTIAGO HAS EMOTIONS!"

She goes silent.

"Nobody understands that this world hates me, do they?"

Her rage boiled up and she walked over to Pierre.

"SANTIAGO DID NOT KILL LIONEL! STOP THROWING LIES INTO MY HEAD! I NEVER LIKED YOU AND I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE HERE! STOP MAKING MY MISERABLE LIFE MORE MISERABLE THEN IT SHOULD BE! YOU DIGUST ME FOR YOUR COLD BEHAVIOR AND YOUR UNTRUSTWORTHY WORDS!"

Moon calmed her voice. Her teary voice came around again.

"I don't even want to look at you or see you again. You are a pathetic person who should live in the most isolated island in the world and stay there until you die a painful, slow death."

Moon ran upstairs while crying her eyes out, she ran to her room and slammed the door as loud as she could. She went to the balcony on the backside of her room and cried there.

Santiago would never kill anyone or anything, or Lionel either, maybe she thought wrong about them both.
