Reverend Apocalypse

"Look! It's a meteor shower!" shouted Mark's mother, already pointing to the sky. Mark quickly turned his head away from the Dungeons & Dragons game that was over the kitchen table and glimpsed outside, "Wow! I never saw so many before!" he said while seeing the dark sky full of white strikes. "Can you turn the TV on? Maybe there is something about it on the news." asked Mark's father while washing the dishes from the dinner. "That can wait. Let's take a picture outside. The meteor shower will not last forever. Come you two, quickly!" shouted Mark's mother, already grabbing Mark's father's arm and bringing him outside. "You too Mark!" shouted Mark's mother, already outside, and when hearing that Mark took a deep breath and forced himself to go too, he hated to take pictures, but his mother would not let him off the hook no matter what.  Mark grabbed his cellphone and walked outside. "Ok, you two, give a long kiss. After all, it's your wedding anniversary!" said Mark, already unlocking the phone and pointing at them. Mark took the picture of both kissing with the meteor shower as a background, and he admitted to himself, the picture looked nice, but when looking at his parents again, Mark saw that the white strikes in the sky seemed way bigger than before. "I don't think is a good idea to stay outside," shouted Mark to his parents. "Don't worry son. Look! Everyone from the neighborhood is outside too!" said her mother, looking at their closest neighbor while waving her hand. Mark looked at his neighbor and waved his hand too. The man smiled back at Mark and exploded. Blood splashed the ground all around, turning the lawn red, while the man's hand flew high in the sky and fell only a few inches from Mark's feet. Mark, astonished, looked down at his neighbor's hand, still with the golden ring on it, and looked back to where his neighbor was before. But now, Mark saw a small beast crawling from the hole made by the meteor, the beast was barely 3 inches in size but was growing at an astonishing speed, and not even 2 seconds later Mark saw a beast the size of a cat coming out of it and jumping on the neighbor's wife, that was still there, on the door, in shock, not believing what was happening. The cat beast was extremely fast and in a blink of an eye ripped the woman's guts out of its belly. The scream made by the woman seemed to wake up everyone around and Mark's father shouted aloud, "RUN!!!!" … Currently releasing one chapter a day.

A few days later, inside Malcom office,

"Doctor Hess, a matter was brought to my attention today," said Malcom, sitting behind his own desk.

"What matter?" asked Prof. Hess.

"The experimental vaccine subject, the one with beast blood in him. I can't turn my head away anymore because he is growing stronger at each day that passes. You need to stop feeding him mutated animal meat. We can't risk have this kind of liability inside our own base. Do you understand my situation?" asked Malcom.

"Are you suggesting we let our only subject for this project to die of starvation?"

Malcom raised from his chair and came to the office window, and looking outside, he said, "The vaccine is our more important goal, but if all scientists involved in this project die, we will never be able to finish it."

"So what do you suggest?" asked Hess.

"I know a clever man like you will be able to find a solution, but in the meantime, I will send more guards to protect you and the other researchers," said Malcom, turning to look in the direction of Hess.

"I have a call in five minutes about the rebels. It seems that news about the human subjects reached them, and they are enraged about it somehow. Our spies said they are planning something big. We are not exactly sure what and which base they are aiming for, but just to be sure, we are freezing any outside mission for the time been; I am saying this to you, because this will affect your supply of mutated animals." said Malcom.

"I understand. I will hold all not essential projects and prioritize the vaccine project. Is that all?" asked Hess, feeling a bit annoyed at wasting so much time in something that could be just a message.

"Yes, there is another matter, and this is a bit more problematic for both of us. The head of the strategic division made me a personal request, and just by that you can understand how this is important...." said Malcom, grabbing a file about Mark that was above his desk, and opening on a specific page that showed a graphic about Mark's strength measurements.

"... He asked me if we can replicate this, on a large scale. This subject ability seems weak at start, but his progression is astonishing. Do you think it's possible?" asked Malcom, talking about the evolution in Mark's strength since he came to the lab.

"With all respect, Sir, but asking me to replicate an ability right now is the same as requesting a medieval witch to clone a human being, its impossible with the information and technology we have right now." said Prof Hess, thinking it was insane to even consider that as an option to begin.

"I understand. You can leave now. I don't want to take more of your time. I will explain this to him in more appropriate words."

Time passed and more experiments were made with Mark, the self depressing feelings he had were completely replaced by rage now, he only wanted to kill every single one of the researches, and in the top of his kill list was Hess, and a little below it was Tyler, the one that caused all of this to him.

Mark didn't know how many days had passed since he came to the lab anymore, could be five or could be twenty, he was not sure anymore because he didn't saw the daylight since he came, and he was drugged or unconscious half the time.

"Wake up your freak! Time for bath!" said a guard, pointing a water hose in Mark's direction.

'Freak, that is me now,' thought Mark. The guards had started calling him by that two days ago, because he was still alive after all he went through.

The guard turn on the water hose, but didn't risk coming close to Mark as they did before. No, now they feared him, and the reason could be seen in Mark's body while the water washed away the blood over his skin.

Several scars appeared as the water removed the dried blood from his skin, but more than that, his body was now like the one of the best athletes on Earth, his muscles that seemed carved by the gods themselves, showed only the superficial strength that he could muster.

Mark raised himself from the ground as the water washed the blood all over his body. The once fragile boy now looked like a determined man, and that could be seen in his eyes, because with barely a single glimpse in the guard's direction, he stopped and closed the water hose.

The torment he went by during these few days only made him stronger, not only physically, but mentally, too.

Mark himself was unaware of that because his personality had changed in these days. The kind of change that is only possible when someone goes through a very traumatic experience, and that was easy compared to what Mark had to endure.

His mind changed, his body changed, 'freak', that was the correct word thought Mark, 'They turned me into a freak', because he knew he was not human anymore, nor was he a beast, he was half beast and half human, 'a freak'.

Only now, hearing that word, did he realize how much they changed him, how much he changed.

Mark raised his head and looked at the guard that stood outside of his cell, "Some day, those chains will not be able to hold me anymore," said Mark raising both arms and shaking the metal and heavy chains attached to the walls, "The day that this happens, will be the day you will die"

Hearing that, the guard flinched, but he knew he was safe, and spit on Mark's face, "Now you are clean" and turned away.

Mark didn't even move when the man spat on him, but deep in his eyes rage could be seen, a very strong rage, one that would not end with some stupid insult, the kind of rage that would never go out.
