Random Chapter IX

Oneliner: "The forest is so deep. Are you sure this is the best place to hide?"

Genre: Fantasy

All I remember, after I woke up, is the city Crestin, in flames and ruins: And somewhere at the border of the capital were two creatures fighting each other. However, it wasn't always like this. Let us go back to the beginning.

My name is Theo Mayers, and it was a casual day as I was on my way towards the Magical Creature Defense Force or for short the MDF. We may call them Magical Creatures but, truth be told all these animal-like monsters are, is another officer or a person with spiritual animals, in their subconsciousness. Sometimes when these beings awake, they go berserk, meaning they attack anyone or anything in their path.

My patrolling routine was close to being finished. It's been quite so far with nothing out of the ordinary. I was wearing the blue rookie uniform for 3 years now all because my Magical creature hasn't awakened yet. The uniform's looks are a lot like those from the US army. The MDF had only as much authority as police officers have. Since I didn't have any way of defending myself against enraged creatures, I have a tranquilizing gun in my weapon holster.

"I love this city, really!" Admiring the city was something like a routine for me too. I was in the Scarlet Griffin Street, and always counted 3 restaurants, 2 pharmacies, the MDF, 25 apartment buildings, and a drug store. The street was the border of the city, so the forest was closeby.

Suddenly my radio beeped up: "Unauthorized Magical Transformation, in Azure Wolf Street. All nearby Alpha officers, please immediately advance." "Tch, Alpha officers?..." These were the people one rank above mine. There are in total of 4 different grades:

The highest going towards the lowest.

The Royal officers. The Attendant officers. The Alpha officersThe Disciple officers.

The ranking is decided by how much control one has over his animal. There is also the DCD, the Divine Creature Defense. It's a unit specialized for Divine Creatures.

Divine Creatures can are either be powerful mythical beings or animals with strong magic powers. The DCD is understaffed since meager amounts of Divine Creatures are born. There is no way to get a job in the DCD without having a Divine Creature inside you. Yet it's a highly lucrative paid job. The DCD officers had the second-highest authority next to the law.

All of a sudden, a fabric fluttering above disrupted my train of thought. A young light blue-haired girl in a white dress was falling from the roof of the apartment building next to me. Out of nowhere, a strange fire in my body heated up every muscle, every instinct, and every reflex. In one moment, I was standing there, startled by all this power, and in the next, I suddenly found myself mid-air catching the girl.

It was unclear how I got that high up in the first place. With the unconscious girl on my chest, we were falling. As we approached the ground dangerously fast, my thoughts were all over the place, panic spreading. Several seconds before hitting the ground, I closed my eyes, preparing for impact. An image of a fox with multiple tails flashed up in front of my inner eye. The strange heat coursed through my body again.

Finally, we hit the ground, yet it was softer and felt more fluffy than expected. Paying that no mind, my attention immediately shifted towards the girl. Taking a closer look at her, it was visible, she was a slave: a dirty white dress, scratches, bruises, and small burns on her arms and neck. Rage built up inside me yet, I couldn't do much slavery was not prohibited in Crestin.

The slave trader came out of the building, yelling at me something inaudible. And as fate decided, everything went from bad to worse. The unauthorized transformed werewolf just ran around the corner into the Scarlet Griffin Street. Stress and panic started to become overwhelming, forcing me to make a few rash decisions.

I tossed a small purse full of gold coins towards the trader and yelled, "I'll come back in a bit" and started sprinting towards the forest. "The forest is so deep. Are you sure this is the best place to hide?" Startled, I looked towards the still unconscious girl in my arms. "If you've got a better plan, please, by all means, don't let me stop you! I mean, it's either that creature or the monsters in the forest, and they are easier to handle."

Finally, having reached the forest, we ran a very time long past trees and bushes bruising and scratching my arms and face. Yet making sure the girl wouldn't get hurt. Reaching a Redwood tree, I used all strength to climb up, with her still in on my chest. After having reached a reasonably high point, rest seemed like heaven.

"I haven't worked out this hard in a long time. You better be grateful." I was looking towards the girl, thinking back to the apartment building. The fleecy feeling from back then bothered me. Finally, risking a look at my own back, a foxtail was wagging back and forth. A loud and exhausted growling ripped me out of my bewilderment.

A deep and angered voice whispered: "Where did ya little insects go?" Still sitting on the Redwood tree, I hoped and prayed he wouldn't find us
