The instructor took a few tentative steps forward before asking, "What is that?" Instantaneously, Pikachu appeared next to him and began looking in every direction. The other hand that Ash had free reached forward and pulled aside some of the brush that was in front of him. He murmured something under his breath as he came to a sudden halt and looked into the sunny clearing in the middle of the little thicket. The dead bodies of approximately six Growlithe were found strewn over a small pond in the area. Although some of the victims' bodies were more severely disfigured than others, all of them had scores of deep gashes and gouges. The sight made Ash sick to his stomach as some of the victims were virtually reduced to bone after being pecked and picked apart. The sight of a human corpse that was just as badly dismembered as the Growlithes and that was laying with one foot in the water and the other foot on the ground made Ash even more cautious.

"I guess we know why the Growlithe was alone and scared," Ash said to Pikachu while not taking his eyes off the dead trainer. "And as much as I'd normally want to investigate... right now I just want to get out of here," Ash continued, "and as much as I'd normally want to investigate... right now I just want to get out of here." Pikachu didn't move. The Pokémon was once more on high alert, and its bright yellow fur stood on end like a coat of needles as it did so. "Come on," Ash said as they turned around to go back the way they'd come. At that moment, Ash heard a low rustling that was gradually becoming louder; it sounded like wings, and lots of them.

Pikachu and Ash both turned away from the gruesome scene and ran back out into the overgrown road. They did so just in time to look up and see that a large flock of birds had flown in from the north-eastern direction and was now circling overhead, approximately fifty metres above their heads. "Are those Spearow?" Ash asked as he and Pikachu ducked into the grass, desperately wishing that the birds with the vicious reputation hadn't seen them yet. Both of them were hoping that the birds hadn't spotted them yet. The trainer hushed both himself and his Pokémon as he spotted two birds that were especially large and were being silhouetted by the sun as they circled overhead. "No," the trainer said.

Ash mumbled, "Fearow," and then noticed that there were two of them.

The large flock of birds circled the thicket for a few minutes, gradually getting closer to it as they descended. They were undoubtedly drawn by the aroma of the carrion meal that was below them. Ash dared not move for fear of alerting the entire flock to his position, and Pikachu, mindful of the gravity of the situation, stayed similarly still, although he was still ready to launch an electrical attack at any moment the opportunity presented itself.

Why did I not dress in any form of camouflage today?

Ash let out an inward grunt as she looked up, just in time to catch the watchful gaze of one of the two Fearow. When he realised that it had seen him, he jumped to his feet and, less than a second later, Pikachu did the same. He then started barking at Pikachu, telling it to follow him. The flock was alerted to the presence of life below by the loud squawking and screeching of the Fearows that were flying overhead. Pikachu was able to keep up with Ash despite the fact that he was running as fast as he could, which caused Ash's adrenaline to start pumping through his veins.

More than a dozen Spearow descended from the sky in a wave that began the assault on Ash. They flew towards him like arrows falling from the sky. As the trainer raced down the path, he turned his head to look over his shoulder and spotted the approaching birds. "Thunderbolt!" Pikachu heard Ash shouting to him, "try if you can catch all of them in the wide spray!"

Pikachu rotated its body and took one step in the opposite direction of its forward momentum before leaping into the air. Pikachu, wanting to ensure that he was higher than Ash, brought both hands up to his cheeks, growled a battle cry, and then bolts of lightning erupted from both sides of his face. Both of the electric lances, when they approached the oncoming Spearow, shattered into dozens of smaller bolts of electricity, which then collided with the birds in a manner analogous to a barrage of anti-aircraft missiles. A quarter of the little birds, the majority of which were located at the head of the flock, suddenly plummeted to the earth, scorched and smoking, with some of them still blazing as they shattered into heaps of charred remains upon impact. Another five or six fell from the sky, too startled to avoid crashing to the ground, where they rolled until they came to a stop and ceased moving.

Pikachu made a turn in the air and continued to chase after Ash, but he eventually halted when he saw that Ash's trainer was continuing to run when the rest of the Spearow got up to them. Ash screeched to a halt as Pikachu came to a standstill, and when he glanced back, he noticed that the little Pokémon was already perspiring. Ash has come to the conclusion that he is only allowed one use of thunderbolt every day. He does not yet possess the necessary stamina.

Pikachu let out another low-pitched groan as he brought both hands back up to his cheeks just as another dozen Spearow descended from the sky. This time, only a single bolt of lightning went into the air, but it struck the Spearow that was in the lead, literally reducing the bird to powder, and then it blasted out in a web of electricity to all of the Spearow that were surrounding it, knocking them out of the air. There were just two Fearow left at this point, but both of the huge Pokémon noticed that Pikachu was beginning to faint from exhaustion.

Ash yelled "Growlithe!" before snatching the one and only pokeball he had and threw it in front of himself. As soon as the ball opened, an orange dog formed in front of Ash, and it was only a metre away from Pikachu. "You need to get out there!"

The orange dog paused for only a second to stare back at Ash, a sneer of scorn appearing on its face for only the instant before it spotted the Fearow swooping in, only a few metres away from the two Pokémon that were lying on the ground. "Just use ember!" Ash yelled at the top of his lungs, trying his best to sound as authoritative as possible.

Growlithe refocused its attention on the two Fearow and opened its mouth in preparation to launch an assault on them. The dog, however, did not fire even a single burning shot since it dithered and hesitated once before each attempt. Ash uttered a scathing curse. It is still worn out and hurt from the struggle it had with Pikachu and whoever or whatever assaulted its pack...

Pikachu, much like Growlithe, hesitated, slowed down with exhaustion, and could barely roll to the side to dodge as both Fearow crashed down to the ground in a gust of talons and thrusting beaks. This was very similar to what happened to Growlithe. Growlithe ducked out of the way, deflecting a talon that was about to hit it in the head across its back flank. It was too simple for the man-sized bird to then pin the dog with one foot and draw back, ready to drive its beak home for a deadly blow when the Fearow's talon tore through Growlithe's pelt and caused the Pokémon to fall to the ground. Pikachu was unable to break away of his conflict with the other bird since he was preoccupied with avoiding talons and using his wings to defend himself.

"Go back here!" The roar of Ash could be heard as he charged forward, his steel baton held with a white-knuckled grip. He thrust his shoulder into the startled Fearow's chest, which caused the bird to fly off Growlithe and cause the creature to fall to the ground. Ash used his advantageous position atop the Fearow to his advantage by bringing his baton straight down with the intention of delivering the knockout blow. He did this while throwing all of his weight behind the blow. Even though the bird rolled underneath Ash in an attempt to defend itself, the significant damage had already been done when his baton made contact with the Fearow's wing with a deafening crack. Even when the Fearow dislodged Ash from its grasp with a swipe of its healthy wing, the bird continued to shuffle beside it while carrying the crippled and severely injured arm.

Before focusing its full attention on the injured Fearow and resuming its advance in front of Ash, the Growlithe cast a single glance back and forth between Ash and the crippled and shrieking Fearow. It then continued its advance. A grin formed on Ash's face. He then commanded the Growlithe to "Complete it!" The dog let out a loud yapping bark before charging forward and lunging headfirst for the bird with its jaws wide open.

Ash focused his attention on his very first Pokémon as he heard the name "Pikachu." Pikachu was on the losing end of the fight, and he saw that Growlithe, with its jaws closed around the wounded Fearow's neck, could probably handle the fight from here on out. "Play it defensive," he ordered, seeing that Growlithe could probably handle the fight on its own. Please make every effort to get behind it so that we can flank it!

Pikachu nodded, and with one more rush of energy, it dove and ducked its way behind the second Fearow. Ash readied himself to charge in once more, even going so far as to lower his shoulder and take the first few steps of the attack. However, a loud yelp coming from his left side caused him to pause before continuing the assault. When he turned around, he saw that Growlithe's Fearow had rolled onto its back, brought its legs up underneath the dog, and then viciously booted Growlithe off, raking the Pokémon's belly with its sharp talons as it did so. Growlithe's teeth had left bloody tears in the bird's neck, but the dog had collapsed into a bleeding heap on the ground. Growlithe's teeth had left bloody tears in the bird's neck.
