There was complete silence among the group of trainers for a whole minute. Pikachu performed a careful check on Ash to ensure that the boy was recovering appropriately. Once the Pokémon was satisfied that Ash was indeed doing as well as could be expected, he curled up into a ball and started taking a light nap. Ash gave the Pokémon that was sitting on his lap a grin and caressed it a little.

Ash stated, "I guess Pikachu's still weary from last night," referring to the previous evening.

Oak stated that "He ought to be." "The lightning bolt strike was incredible to watch. Even I was surprised to learn that Pikachu possessed such a high level of power."

A broader grin spread across Ash's face. "This is Pikachu speaking to you. He has a lot of unexpected qualities."

The Professor, after turning to look at Misty, cleared his throat. "I appreciate you keeping an eye on him," Oak stated to the other person. "Both of us owe you a significant amount."

Misty gave a little shrug. She deflected the compliment by saying, "That wasn't that big of a deal." "I was going to come this way anyhow, and travelling with someone is usually safer than going alone."

Oak gave a small nod and then crossed his arms. After pausing, he said, "So true..." "He said, "There's no simple way for me to say this, so I'm just going to come right out and say it. Pallet Town no longer exists. There is no one else here but the two of us, and neither of you has any use for this place... This is only further evidence that this section of the frontier is no longer secure for human habitation." He was now directly facing Ash, but he continued to address both of the trainers. "But, I want to make it a safe place, and I want your assistance in doing so," she said.

Misty sat in her chair with her legs crossed and relaxed back in the chair. She expressed it in a nonchalant manner, "Only the larger cities are actually safe." "The frontier has always been a wild place, and it probably always will be unless you can somehow come up with a way to give every trainer in the world some advantage over every Pokémon that is found in the wild," said Professor Oak. "The frontier has always been a wild place, and it probably always will be."

Oak grinned just a little. He responded with, "It's funny that you should say that." "Recently, I've been working on a project to do exactly that, but since my facility right here has been damaged, I find myself in need of some assistants."

Ash responded, "Anything I can do to assist Grandfather, I will." "I'm in regardless of what happens."

"That's my grandson," Oak said, with a tone in his voice that was almost reminiscent of excitement. "That's my grandson." Nothing can bring you down or dampen your spirits. He switched his attention to Misty. "He told her, "I can't exactly give much in the way of payment, but if you're willing to help with the project, I'd see to it that you were adequately compensated for your time." Although he couldn't provide much in the way of payment, he made sure that she was compensated fairly for her time. You have already demonstrated that you are an extremely capable trainer and that you are able to look after yourself in untamed environments. Will you lend a hand to us?"

Misty gave a shoulder shrug and then crossed her arms. "She explained, "I don't just join up for dangerous employment without knowing what I'm putting myself into, so please don't take this the wrong way." If you want me to give this any thought at all, you're going to have to provide me with some other information."

Oak responded with, "Of course, of course" "Excuse me, but I got a little ahead of myself there. Someone needs to take an item that I have ordered and deliver it to one of my close friends named William. He is a self-proclaimed "Poke-maniac" who lives in the North, and despite the fact that he may be insane, he is also a brilliant person."

Ash questioned, "What would it be that we would be delivering?"

"Oak said, "I'm getting there," despite the fact that, "now that I think about it," he continued as he stood up, "it would probably be faster for me to just show you." Excuse me." The professor swiftly turned around and exited the building, vanishing through the twisting stacks of apparatus that were located in the basement.

After Ash was certain that Oak was no longer in the vicinity, he spoke the word "Sorry." "My grandfather has been known to get a little worked up."

Misty admonished her friend, "Don't apologise." "It's wonderful to hear that he enjoys what he does. Even after all these years of living on the edge of the wilderness, I find it hard to believe that he can stand by and watch an entire town be destroyed while carrying on as if nothing has happened. The ability is not shared by many people."

Then Ash gave a shrug. He said, "That's the world we live in," and I believe him. "Things go wrong, people lose their lives, and the majority of the time things are just not fair. Yet, this does not mean that we will simply stop trying."

Misty nodded. "I," she started, then paused. "I'm truly sorry," she continued, "I'm really sorry." "I didn't tell you before, but the Professor told me that your mum passed away in the attack that took place last night. I just wanted to let you know that I think it takes a lot of bravery to handle it as well as you have, and if there is any way that I can help, I would... I would like to."

The tremble that went through Ash's chest and made his heart feel tight was concealed by the slight hardening of his expression that he forced himself to perform. Before Professor Oak came back, all he could get out of his mouth was "thank you." As the older man removed a small red device that could fit in the palm of his hand from the pocket of his coat, Ash did everything he could to push any thoughts of his mother out of his mind.

Oak stated, "This is quite probably the most significant thing I've ever made," and went on to elaborate. He raised the device to his eye level and gave Ash and Misty a more in-depth demonstration of the handheld computer. "The problem with our strategy for protecting ourselves from Pokémon," the professor started, adopting an almost pedagogical tone, "is that trainers often only have a small number of Pokémon with which they are conversant. Once a trainer has captured a Pokémon, they are able to gain knowledge about that particular species, including its capabilities as well as its limitations; nevertheless, this is the extent of their knowledge. Beyond his own Pokémon, any given trainer who hasn't spent years travelling the world will be unfamiliar with a Pokémon or monster that he has to face in the wild or that attacks him or his city. This is especially true if the trainer hasn't travelled outside of his home country. The vast majority of trainers, for example those who don't train psychic Pokémon, are unaware of the fact that psychic Pokémon are very susceptible to the abilities possessed by phantom Pokémon." And the information that any trainer absolutely needs to know is the participant's strong points and vulnerabilities. They have to be aware that going up against a Charizard with an Ivysaur is a terrible plan, but unfortunately there are no schools that educate people how to defend themselves in a smart way."

Misty responded, "There are fitness centres." There are gyms in all of the major cities, and these gyms recruit powerful trainers to protect the city from wild Pokémon and other dangers.

Oak stated that this did a lot of good for the little towns and villages that were located along the frontier. "The fact that Gyms feature powerful trainers and Pokémon is irrelevant to the subject at hand. It is just not possible for gyms to provide protection for everyone. Trainers who live in the wild or in less populous cities have a greater need for information than those who live in larger cities. This includes knowledge about the dangers that are present, the advantages and disadvantages of various Pokémon, and strategies for how to protect themselves from harm." And exactly for that purpose this is intended, "Oak gave the device a light shake to test its functionality. "This document is known as the Pokedex. This is a technology that can scan Pokémon and capture information about their genetic makeup. It records their specific strengths and weaknesses, likely habitats, life expectancy, and everything else there is to know about them, and then it sends this information to a database here at my lab... or at least it did before the database was destroyed.

"

Here is where Bill enters the picture, "remarked Oak as he attempted to clear his throat. "He was involved in the creation of the Pokedex, and he has the ability to rewrite it so that it transmits the data it collects to his personal computer. From that location, he is able to transmit the information wherever he chooses. My objective is to compile an exhaustive list of every Pokémon that can be found on this continent into a single document that can be shared with anyone and accessible by them at any time they require it. This would make it possible for every trainer out in the wild to have access to the information they need to gain an advantage over wild Pokémon. It would also provide trainers in the cities with more information that they may utilise to defend their respective cities, allowing them to rely less on raw physical power and more on strategy and tactics. I wish to make copies of the Pokédex available to everyone so that they can refer to it whenever they feel the need. It has the potential to improve and simplify life for everyone, which begs the question: what are your thoughts on the matter? Do you wish to take part in this activity?"

Misty and Ash exchanged a quick gaze with one another. Turning his attention back to Oak, Ash stated, "I already said that I will help." "As soon as I am able to walk, I will assist in any way that I can."

Oak smiled and remarked, "Oh, good," adding, "I appreciate that." He switched his attention to Misty. "Once more, I can't guarantee much, but if you assist Ash in delivering the Pokedex to Bill, I'll do anything I can to make up for it in compensation," he said.

"Well," Misty exhaled with a sigh. "Because to the fact that the red Gyarados is still at large in the ocean, I won't be able to travel any further to the south from here, so I'll have to head north instead... Yes, of course, I'll assist you in this endeavour at least to the point where your friend is concerned. Following that, though, I won't be able to keep any of my promises."

Professor Oak gave a knowing nod while Ash flashed a grin. The older gentleman responded with a heartfelt "Thank you very much." "If nothing else, at least I'll have someone to talk to while we're on the road with Ash," I thought to myself.

Ash questioned, "What is it?" "Are you going to come along with us?"

Oak gave a slight nod of his head. "I can't… It is really necessary for Bill to obtain the Pokedex, but I have to remain here and try to save as much of the laboratory as I can. Because there is a lot of technology around here, I can't take the chance that it will go into the wrong hands."

"Okay," said the character Ash. He looked at the IV that was running from his arm to the bag of fluid that was hanging over his bed and said, "I understand." "In your estimation, how much longer will it be before I can get back on the road?"

"If you take it easy," said Oak. "You should be all set to travel by the time the sun rises tomorrow.

Ash nodded. "At that hour, we'll be on our way then."
