Ash didn't even bother to look up to watch as the fire shot towards him; instead, he was taken aback by the dazzling flash of white light that appeared in front of him and nearly caused him to lose his vision. Misty, who had suddenly appeared behind Ash and was being protected on either side by a Pokémon that resembled a massive starfish, yelled "barrier!" before the light had even finished taking form.

A blue wall appeared out of nowhere in front of Ash and the new Pokémon, which had just started taking the form of a third, but much larger, starfish. The construction of the blue barrier was immediately followed by the arrival of the black fire, leaving no opportunity for any kind of delay at all. The scalding wave of heat swept around the shield like a river striking a boulder, surrounding Ash, Misty, and their Pokémon on all three sides as it moved forward.

Ash looked around and saw that Misty was shielding her face from some of the mind-numbing heat by holding one arm in front of her face and reaching out with the other hand to collect another pokeball. She then hurled it behind Ash, and out of the white energy came another Pokémon, this one a massive turtle that Ash immediately recognised as a Blastoise.

"Provide some sort of cover for us!" Misty ordered.

The Blastoise fell down onto all fours without any hesitation and scurried between Ash and the purple Starmie as the wave of black fire dissolved to nothing and the barrier disappeared. Misty was able to retrieve the weakening Starmie from its fatigued state by using a pokeball. "Tackle it!" Misty barked when she saw that the Gyarados continued to concentrate on them.

Ash had never seen something of that huge move at such a breakneck speed before, but the Blastoise lowered its shoulder and charged forward at full speed. It closed the distance between them in a fraction of a second and rammed its head into the Gyarados's torso, throwing it off-kilter in the process. The Gyarados shifted while it was in the middle of firing yet another Hyperbeam, and it sent the chromatic energy blast through the roof of a building that was twenty metres to Ash's left.

As soon as Ash heard the thunderous explosion, he turned to his left and saw the building burst into flames. However, it was too late for him to realise that it was the plant in which Pallet Town processed the natural gas that it had gotten from the Cinnabar pipeline. After then, it appeared to Ash, if only for a split second, that the entire globe had gone boom. Everything went white, and just as he was about to hear nothing, the thundering explosion of the exploding processing facility drowned out any other sound that might have been present. In addition to the surge of heat that he felt ram into him from all sides like a building that was falling apart, he saw a screaming pain pulsing in his side.

It took Ash a little while to realise that he wasn't dead once the world started coming back into focus and the ringing in his ears gradually faded into the popping of fires around him. However, once he did realise that he wasn't dead, he was relieved beyond words. He was unable to sit up, but when he opened his eyes, he saw the sky filled with thick black smoke and the bright red glare of fire.

"Ash," he heard his name called as if he were perceiving it through a wall. "Ash," he heard his name called. "Ash!" the voice screamed out once more, increasing its volume slightly this time. Now as he looked up, he observed that there was a face silhouetted against the night sky just above him. When Misty glanced down at him, he abruptly recalled that he was supposed to be engaged in a struggle for his life. Once the rush of adrenaline that was now coursing through his veins cleared the haze from his head, he staggered to his feet and looked about. Everything was on fire, but Misty and her Blastoise, Pikachu, and Growlithe formed a protective circle around him and stood guard. Although Ash could see the Gyarados from a distance of several blocks, it was fleeing in the direction of the ocean as Oak pursued it with his Pokémon.

Ash started to say "Misty," but was unable to finish the word after the first syllable. It was as if someone were stabbing him in the side with a spear all of a sudden, and he jerked away from Misty and looked down at himself. He soon identified the source of the excruciating pain; a wooden stake with a diameter comparable to that of a tent peg protruded from his side by about the width of a hand and only partially covered the wound it had torn in him. Blood was flowing down Ash's shirt and seeping out from the sides of the stake where it had been pierced.

Misty placed her hands on Ash's shoulders and compelled him to lie down on the ground before telling him, "Don't move." She managed to keep him still as the Pokémon stood guard. She hissed, "If you hold still I can keep you from bleeding to death," while she held a tightly woven gauze in one hand and reached for the steak with the other. "If you hold still I can keep you from bleeding to death." "On the count of three, I'm going to take it out, and I need you to help me keep pressure on the gauze, ok?" "I'm going to pull it out, and I need you to help me keep pressure on the gauze."

Ash heaved a sigh and muttered, "In-in-infection," despite the fact that each breath sent another splinter of anguish into his side and into his lungs. Yet, despite the discomfort, he positioned his hand in order to carry out Misty's instructions.

"Don't worry about it," the fitness instructor with orange hair replied. "It is much more likely that you will pass away from bleeding out than from an illness, especially given the availability of drugs to treat infections. First, second, and third!"

Misty gave a sharp jerk, and the lance-like scrap of wood that was the stake slid out of Ash's side with a slurping gurgle as the wound spat out some blood before Misty slapped the gauze over the open puncture. The lance was about six inches long. In spite of the excruciating pain, Ash clenched his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut, but he still managed to reach down, put his hand on the makeshift bandage, and press it into the incision to stop the bleeding.

Misty gave the order, "Pressure pressure pressure," as she removed her hand from the stake and tossed it to the ground beside her, where it landed next to her bag. "Pressure pressure pressure," she repeated three times. She put her hand inside the backpack and brought out a small case made of white plastic, which she then placed next to Ash. "This is going to hurt," she said as she opened the box and pulled out several long metal staples. "This is going to hurt," she said.

Misty was working at a pace that was close to frenetic as she attempted to close up Ash's wound using the staples to hold the puncture closed. Eventually, she was successful. It was not difficult to find a source of heat to cauterise the wound, and a few moments later, while Misty was sitting on her knees, she leaned back from Ash, who had passed out a few seconds into the procedure. Ash had been unconscious for a few seconds. Misty told herself that the fact that the boy was alive and would survive long enough for someone who was more knowledgeable in medicine to do a proper job was something to be proud of. The improvised surgery wasn't pretty, and it would probably leave the boy with an ugly scar that would never completely disappear, but he was alive and would survive long enough for someone who was more knowledgeable in medicine to do a proper job.

Misty took a deep breath and stood up as Professor Oak, who was accompanied by a vanguard of monstrous escorts, ran to the location of the incident. Misty was beginning to feel tired as the adrenaline's effects began to wear off. While he was crouching down by his grandson and asking, "Is Ash alright?," he paid little attention to Misty or the Pokémon that were surrounding her. "What on earth took place?"

Misty responded in a brusque manner, "Shrapnel." She swiftly updated the Professor on the situation, informing him that "it missed anything crucial but trauma and blood loss are still going to be dangerous." "We need to transfer him to a secure location as soon as possible and perform more extensive medical treatment. In addition to that, we need to begin administering medicines to him."

It took Oak only a split-second to turn his head and glance up at the girl, and his eyes immediately lit up with interest. "Who precisely are you, and how exactly do you know my grandson?"

The young lady introduced herself as Misty. "What about taking him someplace secure at this point?"

Oak nodded. "Of course… The basement of my laboratory is still in good condition, and it houses some of the older pieces of equipment "He gestured with his palm, and his Machamp moved forward to pick up Ash in a careful manner. "Let's go."
