Searching and Unexpected Finding

The mere memory of the little boy who brought me joy made my body shiver as I returned to reality.

I looked around to see some supervisors talking and people around due to the spectacle created by the 2 boys, I slowly realized I needed to find Rose, it had been a long time since checking up on her and I grew worried, my legs started moving as if they knew where I was supposed to go and took me to the dormitories.

The room was empty as I stood in the middle of it, trying to think of where else I could find her but a voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Looking for Rose? Don't worry, she's with Madame Leonelle sorting some things out"

I turned around and found Supervisor Cedric standing behind me, his arms crossed over his chest and a sly smirk upon his face, his loud boots slowly made their way closer to me.

"When will she come back? What is she doing?"

The supervisor kept looking at me before one of his hands slid up to his face, I looked at it and saw a copper stain between his pointer and middle finger.

Tobacco residue.

"Madame Leonelle has great trust in her, she needs her to help out in one of the divisions."

Oh okay, so they were forcing my innocent best friend to kill people, good to know.

I didn't feel satisfied with that answer but his presence made me grow annoyed so I tried walking past him

"I'm not the bad guy, you know?"

That was utter bullshit.

No one with basic human decency would choose to work here, no one in their right mind would simply go to a remote building to perform human experiments, lobotomies, and chemicals.

"You're 'not the bad guy' and yet you go out of your way to leave your home. Come to a random house in the middle of nowhere and assist human torture, got it."

I knew I was outstepping my boundaries, if I didn't shut up I could really come to regret it and I was utterly aware of it but yet my mouth couldn't stay shut, my body simply wouldn't allow me to completely step out of the room.

"I'm here because back home I almost got killed-"

I didn't let him finish.

"So you resorted to killing others instead?"

I needed to stop, I needed to keep my mouth closed. If I kept talking this could backfire and not in a temporary way.

"I just needed a roof over my head and money, they don't exactly tell you what you're going to be doing until you're sitting in front of a scary-looking person with a gun pointed at you and a pen at your hand.

I walked into the devil's mouth without knowing it."

I didn't exactly feel pity for him but it made some sense, people not being fully aware of what they're getting themselves into.

I looked at him one last time before walking out of the room, I wasn't sure what to do without Rose.

I could go back into the room to read but Supervisor Cedric would still be in there.

Looking around, I decided to just take a walk around the readaptation camp, I walked downstairs where the room opened up, more windows letting some light in as some snow hit the glass, I walked aimlessly for a little bit, thinking deeper into the conversation I had with the supervisor.

When my consciousness came back to me, I found myself standing in a dark room I'd never seen before, the walls were made of stone and the only thing inside was cobwebs, a big chest, and a dusty desk with a chair, I definitely was not supposed to be in there.

I looked at the desk, nothing special other than small writing carved into it, then the chest... curiosity got the best of me and I opened it up.

There were a bunch of papers inside, most rolled up and sealed with wax, but there were a few envelopes that weren't sealed, the entire chest was full of dust and I'd seen a few spiders crawling around inside.

I opened one of the envelopes and found a letter, it seemed like some sort of reused paper and it was someone confessing their attraction towards someone else. Probably the recipient.

The letter was written in pencil and the names had been scribbled over with black ink.

I found the letter fascinating and yet confusing, how would a letter like that end up here?

I decided to look at the other couple of envelopes and it was the same thing, no names, no dates or anything (truthfully though, I could never even guess today's date as we never used dates) but it was a love letter, very innocent and kind.

It talked about wanting to be together and wishing for a different life.

Maybe the person who left this behind, was some sort of worker here and someone home had sent or given them letters.

Perhaps the sender wished things were different, maybe for the recipient to be able to live with the sender instead of here.

I wondered who this letter could possibly belong to.

I was torn between leaving it and taking it, it was something that made me feel closer to reality, or at least gave me an idea of what life would be like... a life that isn't perfect.

I decided to leave the letter behind and started walking back to where the dormitories were, hoping Rose would be back, I had been away for quite some time as the light was starting to recede into the ground, the sky darkening.

As I walked back to the main part of the building I started to realize how I always daydreamed of a perfect life, something unachievable, life is never perfect it seems, there's always a "what if" or a reason for someone to long something greater...
