Orlov's Files

Nikolai Orlov did not expect his new year to start with him in another body and drowning in a river after a bullet grazed the side of his skull. Swimming up, he realized that he had now possess the ability to stay in third-person and use the ability of his game character from an open-world crime simulation game he once played. However, in this world where there are augmented humans and crazy crime families aiming for power, his abilities weren't that impressive. Corporations, Crime Families, Augmented Humans, and even mutants, how the hell would he survive without stepping on their toes?

Got myself entangled in this business. One thing about knowing some things is that it will change later on. The future isn't exactly straight. It has multiple pathways that do not follow the natural courses. Each stone you move affects the flow of the river. You know what's stopping me from having full control?

Conflicting ambition.

Humans aren't exactly the type to be obedient. We are fearful. But once we are afraid of something. We think of different ways to get rid of that fear. And I'm dealing with people who are experienced criminals with no moral qualms about killing and one of them is a legend before she became a being inside a synthetic body.

You try to control them and a seed inside them grows resentful. They think they are being oppressed and that rebellious attitude that made them who they are roars and they do stupid shit to try and take control of their lives. One thing about being in power is that it takes effort and actual work to do it. It was easier to let them handle the role while I reap benefits from it.

I don't fancy playing mind games with the heads of Karagi. Not to mention that playing their game would mean that I would expose myself as a faker. These people have dealings with Morgan and not aligning to Morgan's personality is a death sentence.

I know this world better. I know what these people are. I have their profiles. Their likes and dislikes if I still try to change their minds. It would only backfire. You cannot change the mind unless it's brainwashing or through the use of influence and making them change their minds. They must be convinced by words and by their own mind to make them work.

Not to mention that I rather not try and fail at it. Marion's already pumping information on my PDA and I have a wealth of information that could index and catalog what I see and hear easily.

I don't really mind them taking over. They are already making moves that I expected them to do. Nix was expanding his territory while Marion is persuading old friends to align with her and make the people on top wary about her and Trixie. SAI, the sentient artificial intelligence, was going to be one of the deciding factors of the Karagi Platforms.

The Karagi Platforms has always been divided by the multi-platform hierarchy that was nothing more than a physical division of the wealth of the people living in Karagi. Debt-slaves were on the bottom of the platform while the rest are in the middle where they barely get by.

It is quite horrifying knowing the difference between Pacifica and Karagi in the first place. Karagi is a nightmare. Pacifica is almost mild, but at the same time still is filled with mercs and contractors who are willing to fuck everything for dollars. They are the kind of individuals that asks how much when they are asked if they were going kill a child.

Maybe being close to death thrice had already made me quite cynical. I don't easily trust anyone and it pains me that the only person that I would rather trust is living with that little girl.

Now for some answers. Karagi is inherently important because of the factories, corporations, and its production values. Why I was allowing myself to be part of this mess is so that I can have ears in Karagi. Karagi is a shithole but it is also the second heart of this region. This region cannot easily function without the economic output of aragi. Pacifica is the place where these big bosses go and talk to. Sometimes the big bosses kill each other and do what they have to do in order to try and maintain a profitable status quo. Doesn't mean that they aren't greedy fucks who wants to rule the world.

It simply is that they crave stability and the constant influx of money going to their bank accounts, allowing them to live their hedonistic lives. Earning money. Planning how to earn money. Manipulating choices that will benefit them. It was rather tiresome that I'd rather have someone already competent to take a role. Morgan is a well-known solo. It doesn't suit his style to become a leader of an organization. Keeping up appearances is important to Morgan and the reason why they have fear of Morgan is because he doesn't sit on the rules.

Been a week since that problem. Have made my connections. Made quiet deals with small-time mobsters who are willing to work with Trixie and Marion while Nix does what he does best.

However, it was only a while ago that made me realize that the memorandum in Pacifica wasn't solely limited to Pacifica alone. The thing about all of this is that it makes me feel foolish. Or perhaps my latest venture on making changes had made this possible. The government is the most dangerous entity that you can fight. Corporations, mafias, and gangsters play by the rules set by the government to minimize the danger to the tax-paying civilians.

It is also because of certain fanatics that makes it impossible for the rule of law to become the sole boogeyman they listen to. There was no complete obedience to the law that the only thing they are after is to make it sure that there is order at least.

That order is paved by the blood, sweat, tears, and bullets of every law enforcer of this region. Even as I watch the parade of 10-foot tall powered suits entering the area and the flying drones. It made me realize that there are some changes that made it easy for the government to do what they want. And from what I've learned from the top dogs of Karagi.

It seems like transporting those containers of gold made the government decide on this memorandum and the fault belongs to those who made the transaction happen.

Who I happened to be part of.
