Old flame and new flame?

Ena opened her eyes but shut them tightly after seeing a bright light. She tried again and her eyes began to adjust to the light from the ceiling. She tried to move but her body ached all over. She looked down and saw some bandages around her arms and legs. A nurse approached her and she immediately called the doctor upon seeing her awake.

It took her a week to be able to sit up on her own.

"Did he answer?"

"I'm sorry Ms. Breyl but there was still no answer from your boyfriend." The nurse said.

She initially thought it was understandable since he was on a business trip overseas and they were using the hospital's phone since she did not have access to her smartphone at the moment, but then it had already been a week and he still had not responded. She was already worried sick about him.

Late at night, she tried to call again using the payphone in the hospital and someone finally answered.

"Ena." It was a woman's voice.

"Who is this? Can I talk to Jake?"

"Jake is sleeping."

"What? Who is this?"

"It's Danielle."

Danielle? The newbie from the sales department?

"Jake was about to tell you once he got back. We are having a baby and I know that we are in the wrong, but please, for the sake of this baby, let Jake go."

"Who is that?" Jake asked in a sleepy voice.

She ended the call with shaking hands. She then promised herself that it would be the last night that she would shed a tear for Jake.

She was being sexually harassed by one of her new colleagues when Jake stepped in. That was the first time that someone saved her from her troubles and she immediately fell for him. They continued to date even if she was transferred to a different department. Jake is the new head of the sales department. He has a perky personality and is really fun to be with, but because of that personality, he barely has enough time for her. She thought he was too busy to even cheat, but that was just a stupid mistake.

Now he is back from his business trip along with his pregnant mistress. She attended the general meeting and saw Danielle with a slight bump on her belly.

Just how long was it that they were cheating on me?

She decided to look up at the podium and saw their CEO. He was looking right at her. She felt uncomfortable and just lowered her head. He had just come back from his business trip and they were not able to talk properly yet about that night.

"Pay attention, Ena." Manager Jane reprimanded.

"Yes ma'am."

The meeting ended, and they were on their way back when Jake appeared before her. Most departments knew of their issue by now and so their manager told them to have an early break. Her coworkers went away, and she was left standing there with Jake.

"Your hair looks nice."

The things he says that she used to cherish now all sound like a lie.

"We need to talk."

She shook her head.

"I don't think that is a good idea."

"It was a mistake. I will not run away from the child, but I am not giving up on you either."

"Jake please…" She looked around and saw there were eyes on them.

"Let's just talk."

She sighed. She knew that he would not stop and to save them from embarrassing themselves, she just needed to agree to talk to him.

"Is this a matter of urgency?" Aidan asked as he appeared between them.

"No Sir," Jake responded meekly.

Aidan looked at him like he was about to drag him to the depths of the underworld when Jake finally excused himself. She was about to excuse herself too when he said something that stopped her in her tracks.

"You look pretty," he said.

She turned to him with a bothered expression but he just smiled at her. She looked around and was thankful that no one else was close enough to hear them.

"Let's have dinner tonight."

"Sir…"

"You don't want to?"

She just looked at him.

"I'm sorry but I can't. My break is over. Please excuse me."

She walked away without looking back. She wondered how she could have had the courage to say no to him. She was just too afraid of what could come after if anyone knew, and she just could not believe that a man of his caliber would even take her seriously. So far, with Jake's betrayal, she is pretty much done with high-caliber men.

She worked diligently and, thankfully, with her anger towards Jake, her blood boiled up to her brain and she could think clearly. She finished her tasks on time and was about to go home when she saw Jake waiting at the first-floor gate. She immediately pressed the close button on the elevator and arrived at the parking area. It was quite inconvenient that she had to walk to the exit, but there was no other way. Suddenly, a black, shiny car stopped next to her. The window rolled down and, as she suspected, it was him.

"Get in," Aidan said.

"I can just walk- "

"Get in." He emphasized each word that she felt so intimidated by and just went inside, but instead of sitting next to him at the back, she sat next to the secretary who was driving. Gavin nervously looked at him from the mirror, and he had this displeased look that chilled him to the bone. Ena just pretended not to notice.

"Drive," Aidan said.
