Chapter 4 Mourning

Alpha Frederick's P.O.V

I watched life slip out from Luna Lydia's body. I screamed ordering the maids to call for the doctor.

When the doctor arrived minutes later after they were called, he tried opening her eyes which were now glued to one another. The next thing he did was to reach for her pores while I closed my eyes behind the scene giving a quiet prayer on her behalf.

The doctor pulled his head up shaking his head from left to right.

"I am sorry to tell you this Alpha Frederick but we lost her,"

Immediately I heard the last part, I fell to the ground beside my luna's lifeless body with baby still in my arms.

He had managed to gain some sleep but my awful shriek made him wail.

The midwife immediately came to his rescue wriggling him away from my embrace.

I rose from the mat, heading towards the corridor making my way down the stairs. My strides were long, they were hard and I took the stairs twice a time. The house was still inactive as it was only dawn.

I opened the door leading to my big courtyard which we use for training the young pack members to be warriors and defend the pack from rogues.

Outside, the sun was still struggling to rise and the trees were still.

Without wasting any time, filled with grieve and anger over the death of my Luna which meant that I was now incomplete without a mate, I let my angry wolf__ Edgar__ take possession of my flesh.

In a blink of an eye, I was a big black wolf standing in my courtyard and before I knew it, Edgar blew the alarm that had been clutched in him since the death of Elsa his mate.

He howled three times, it was a howl that was void of emotions, a howl that invited my pack members to gather around me worried about what had happened in the packhouse to make their Alpha growl in such a manner.

My mouth was up as I relieved myself from the grief with the numerous howls as I protruded.

About ten minutes later, my pack members started filling into the courtyard all of them in their wolf forms.

It was strange to have them here this early morning especially as it wasn't a pack meeting.

Many others kept coming as they formed a circle around me. While others were busy licking their paws, others sat on their hind limbs and some scratched their furs.

They were remorseful as they watched me moan over my loss.

The only issue is that they did not know why their Alpha was in such a mood.

***

After about one hour of me in that mood, I slowly transformed into my human body. Edgar returned to his safe place in the shadows and gave me the opportunity to face my pack members.

They followed my example and transformed into their respective human forms. I watched their different transformation as their paws gave way to hands and hind limbs to legs. Their beautiful colored furs gave way to glowing skins as the first rays of the morning sun glowed through their bodies.

I gulped hard as I stood before them my hands on my head with a suppressed fury hiding my tears behind my cold blue eyes.

I coughed lightly drawing the attention of my pack members, I noticed that not everyone is present, but one thing to be sure of was that by dusk, the whole Dark-Light pack would have heard about the terrible news.

When I was certain that I had enough attention, I started my announcement.

"Good morning members of the Dark-Light pack, (I started) It is sad to see you all gather here with me to find out what has happened to your Alpha coupled with the fact that the morning is so cold and you all have your other activities to carry on," I took a pause to catch my breath.

The look on their faces was barren as they were confused about what had happened.

After a break, I continued.

"Luna Lydia gave birth to a baby boy early this morning," I passed the information as the group started chit-chatting smiles filling their faces.

"But, she is dead," I landed hearing my pack members' cheers turn into silent moans.

There was a moment of silence whereby the members consoled one another.

"There is even a more delicate issue, the baby she gave birth to is the 'Golden wolf' the one the prophecy talks about, we now have a shifter in this pack," I concluded.

Their faces were sullen as they comprehended what I had just said.

"The baby is cursed because his birth invited the spirit of death to take away his mother's life, I hope he doesn't destroy the rest of the pack even before he can rule," I added staring squarely at my pack members.

While others murmured beneath their breathe to their neighbors, some were shaking their heads as if they had just heard the most terrible thing that could be said on Earth.

I did not wait for their sympathy, as the Alpha of the Dark-Light pack, I was truly in grief but that did not mean that I would openly express my grievances to the rest of the pack.

As the Alpha, I had my own ego, as a man, I had my own pride and that did not mean that I would show any sign of weakness in front of my pack members.

At the end of my announcement, I led Edgar take control of my outer flesh as I speed out to the open forest that greeted me.

No one tried stopping me, I kept skipping far into the forest as the breeze flowed in my face caressing my furs.

I did not feel the breeze on my face and as if the Earth knew that I was in grief, the sun that started shining brightly was suddenly covered with dark clouds.

These dark clouds did not make me turn back to my pack house but rather, I continued until I came to a very big clearing.

It was surrounded by tall trees and immediately I stepped into the center, the droplets from the rain started pouring.

The heavens spattered its heavy tears to the earth, soaking and drenching my furs. The climate matched with my mood and the water that flowed on my skin was like pure punishment to my soul.

The raindrops were heavy, each time a drop touched me, it made my wolf give a loud growl as if it was about to launch to attack it.

This clearing was the place where I had first met Lydia. She was beautiful as a morning rose, sweet, and naive. The first sound that resonated in my mind was 'MATE' but there was no way for me to approach her as I was timid back then.

I remember our numerous secret meetings in this hiding place, we had our first kiss here, this clearing was already a temple to our love life, to our love affairs, and even our secret nights.

Each time we met, we always had series of discussions concerning the pack. I remember, by then I was still the beta of the Dark-Light pack.

Then, when I proposed to her, 'Holy Crap!' the emotions that were embedded in her simple answer "Yes" made me want to go mad.

I had loved Lydia ever since our first meeting and that had not changed till the day she inhaled her last breathe. Her baby face always drew me close to her, she was not only a mate to me, she had the position of a mother to me, always caring and protective even though it was the right for the Alpha to always protect the Luna.

Lydia's image was the only thing that kept appearing on my face as there was no way for me to reach it.

At one point, I paced forth with muddy paws launching to grab her but it was just my imagination playing me dirty tricks. I hated that dumb prophecy for bringing me through so much pain.

My baby is indeed innocent but why did he have to be 'the chosen?'

The prophecy should have waited for another decade or a dozen years before coming to pass but no, all it wanted was to ruin my life and that of my family.

All these angered boiled through me coupled with the torrent pours of the rain on my furs, I let out a howl that sent all the birds on the trees flying.

It did not end there, I kept on howling, wishing that a miracle will happen and Lydia or even her wolf Elsa would walk towards this field which had become like a temple to us.

When nothing happened and I was convinced I would never see my beautiful Luna again, I started pacing my way back to the pack house.
