"Alanna, I think of your mother every single day." Dad murmurs nostalgically. " I hang her photos everywhere, I tell you every story I know about Amy...I try to keep her memory alive. Your mother was taken from us, and she never got the chance to see you all grow up. Ryan has a chance -- so why is he running? Only cowards run!" "He doesn't know." I repeat my manta. "Ryan doesn't know about the pregnancy."

"He could have told us he needed time. I would never force him to mate with this girl, if he didn't want to. But he could have tried to accept her!" "There's not much else we can do, Dad. All we can do is wait." I reply, approaching him tentatively. Resting a hand on his shoulder, I wait for him to accept it.

"Where will they go?" Dad utters anxiously, running his hand through his hair. "They have no money...they're known fighters! Rogues will target them! I can't lose any of my children...I refuse to let that happen!"
