He wouldn’t betray the fact that Mathias was still alive. As far as Tatiana was concerned, she’d succeeded in killing him, and Edmund was content to let her continue to believe that. It kept Mathias safe—well, reasonably safe. But if he wanted to keep Shea on his side, Edmund knew he had to tell the other vampire something.

Leaning forward, Edmund rested his forearms on his knees as he regarded Shea. “What if I told you Zak Ilyin helped Tatiana kill Mathias?” he said carefully.

“She did what?” Shea unfolded his rangy body to mirror Edmund’s position, lowering his voice at the same time. “You told me she was trying to kill you.”

“She is. But I found that out when I heard that she’d already done the same to Mathias.”

“But there hasn’t been word one in the Assembly about that. As far as they’re concerned, Tatiana and Mathias are still missing.”
