Edmund gritted his teeth and stepped farther into the room, trying to block Mathias out from the conversation. “Consider it a policing force for the vampire community,” he said to Darby. “In order to protect us—”

“Allegedly.”

“—from making ourselves extinct, they enacted a few laws to keep that from happening. Mostly to do with who and when we can kill.”

“And sire.”

This time, Edmund didn’t cut off Mathias’ contribution, nodding in agreement. “They decided that we were putting ourselves at risk by indiscriminately turning people. Exposing vampires to more sophisticated authorities who wouldn’t be as easy to shake as police a hundred or even fifty years ago. So they made it illegal, for the most part. Punishable by immediate death.”

She was a smart one, this Darby Bell. Mathias could see the thought processes ticking inside her pretty little head. He knew the exact moment she made the connection.

“You sired Mathias,” she said.
