“Because it iscrazy,” she was saying. “You want me to believe vampires are real. That my best friend is some kind of made for the movies monster, and that the guy who’s been driving me nuts is really a bloodsucking fiend. That I didn’t just see you with your teeth in his neck, and that…”

Her voice faded away. Time ticked by as they waited for her to process the images that must still be buffeting around inside her head.

When several minutes passed and nobody had moved or spoken, Edmund glanced in Mathias’ direction. “Come here,” he said quietly.

His feet ventured forward of their own volition, stopping only when he stood in front of them. Darby was pale, her breathing shallow, her eyes unfocused, and he immediately understood Edmund’s concern. The shock was winning.
