But Darby was in the next room, and there was no way she wasn’t still awake. She could walk out any minute and witness them, and then where would Edmund be? Mathias wasn’t his future; he was his past. It was time to move on.

Except he couldn’t let go.

“You gave me up four years ago,” he said. “You chose, remember? And you didn’t choose me. Or even us.”

The amused smile faded. “Is that what you’re waiting to hear?” Mathias asked. “For me to tell you I’m sorry?”

It wasn’t until he heard the words that Edmund realized they were true. But damn if he was going to say that.
