It was a typical morning in a quaint school nestled in the idyllic Westchester County of New York. As the teacher droned on with the day's lesson, a young girl with flowing blonde locks sat at her desk, seemingly engrossed in taking notes. However, with a glance around the classroom, she saw that some of her fellow students were not as attentive. At that moment, an idea sparked within her mind.

Without hesitation, the girl surreptitiously grabbed a small piece of paper and began scribbling furiously. Her pen danced across the page as she carefully crafted a message.

A mischievous grin spread across her face as she deftly crumpled the paper in her hand. The girl looked at the brown-haired boy sitting across from her.

With a quick flick of her wrist, the girl launched the crumpled ball of paper across the room, her aim true. The projectile sailed through the air, landing squarely on the unsuspecting boy's desk with a soft thud.

The brown-haired boy sat at his desk, his attention focused on the teacher's words as she lectured the class. Lost in thought, he was completely unaware of the blonde girl's actions beside him. But as he glanced down at his notebook, something caught his eye, a small ball of paper that had landed there unnoticed.

With a puzzled expression, he picked up the crumpled ball, wondering how it had gotten there. As he examined it closely, he noticed a hint of handwriting peeking out from within. Curiosity piqued, he looked up to see the blonde girl sitting across from him, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She gestured towards the paper, urging him to open it.

When the boy read the words on the crumpled paper, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He turned to face the blonde girl, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

"What do you want, Raven?" he asked telepathically, his tone laced with curiosity.

Raven couldn't help but giggle at his question. "It's so difficult to get your attention when you're focused on something, Charles," she quipped, her eyes twinkling mischievously.

Raven's mind raced as she stole glances at Brad, the blonde boy sitting at the far end of the classroom. He seemed so distant, his eyes fixated on his textbook, that she couldn't help but twirl a strand of her hair nervously.

As if sensing her unease, her brother, Charles asked, "What's on your mind?"

Raven hesitated for a moment before blurting out, "Brad asked me out yesterday, but I can't tell if he's interested in me. Can you read his thoughts and see if he's thinking about me?"

Charles smirked, his eyes narrowing. "With pleasure, Raven. Nobody gets to date my sister without me going through their thoughts," he declared, eager to prove his protectiveness towards his sister.

Charles furrowed his brow as he honed in on Brad's thoughts, his eyes focused intently on the blonde boy at the end of the classroom. His mind raced as he delved deeper into Brad's consciousness, searching for any hint of sincerity or authenticity.

Finally, he turned to Raven, his expression grave. "I don't think he's suitable for you, Raven," he stated bluntly.

Raven's face twisted in confusion and frustration. "What? Why do you think that?" she demanded.

Charles fought to suppress a grin as he replied, "Let's just say that his thoughts are a little...unsettling. He's thinking about drinking milk from his little sister's baby bottle, of all things."

Despite herself, Raven couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. "Okay, that's weird," she admitted. "But can you at least look through his memories from when he asked me out? I want to know how he really feels about me."

Charles shook his head regretfully. "I'm sorry, Raven. I can't look through people's memories. All I can hear are their unwanted thoughts and emotions."

Raven gave him a sympathetic look. "Don't worry, Charles. It'll be alright."

Charles sighed and glanced back at the teacher, his mind heavy with the weight of his unique abilities. "I hope so too", he murmured to himself.

As the final bell of the school day rang, Charles and Raven gathered their belongings and made their way out of the classroom. They stepped out into the fresh air and began their journey back home. However, as they were walking, Raven came to a sudden halt in front of a grocery store. Charles turned to look at her curiously, wondering what had caught her attention.

Raven had her eyes fixed on the display of ice cream in the grocery store. Her gaze drifted to the label of a raspberry-flavored ice cream container.

Raven turned to Charles with her big, pleading eyes and put on her most irresistible puppy-dog face. "Please, Charles," she begged. "I saw they have raspberry-flavored ice cream, and I've been dying to try it. Can we please go in and get some?"

Charles felt his resistance slipping away as he gazed into Raven's eyes, the corners of her mouth slightly turned up in a hopeful smile. He hesitated for a moment before giving in, letting out a resigned sigh and agreeing to her request. "Alright, alright," he said, "but on one condition - I have to get one too."

Raven's eyes lit up with excitement as she said, "Deal!" Charles, with a flicker in his eyes, concentrated his telepathic abilities on the woman behind the counter.

Charles concentrated hard, his mind fully attuned to the thoughts of the woman behind the counter. After a few moments, he turned to Raven and spoke in a hushed tone, "She's thinking about a novel - 'The Loved and the Lost' by Morley Callaghan."

Raven nodded and her form shifted and transformed, taking on the appearance of a grown woman. She strode confidently into the grocery store, scanning the aisles for the raspberry-flavored ice cream that she had set her heart on. As she approached the counter, she noticed the woman's name tag, which read "Anna." Raven smiled warmly and greeted her, striking up a conversation about the novel that Anna had been thinking about.

Charles watched her engage in a lively conversation with the woman behind the counter, who was now beaming with excitement. Charles observed how his sister's charm could disarm anyone, even the most reserved of individuals.

After a few minutes, Charles decided to go inside the store and check on Raven. As he walked through the aisles, he could see his sister and the woman deep in conversation, their heads bent toward each other.

Eventually, Raven noticed Charles and waved at him. Charles walked towards the ice cream section, where he picked out two raspberry-flavored ice creams and walked out of the store.

Charles waited patiently as Raven chatted with the woman behind the counter. He watched as the two engaged in an animated conversation about their shared love of literature. After a few moments, Raven bid the woman farewell and walked out of the store with a wide smile on her face.

As she approached him, Raven transformed back into her usual blonde self and eagerly asked if he had gotten the raspberry ice cream. Charles nodded and handed her one of the sticks, taking a lick of his own as they began to walk home.

As they walked, they continued to chat and enjoy their sweet treat, relishing the simple pleasure of a sunny afternoon spent in each other's company.

When Charles and Raven entered the house, the silence was palpable. There was no sign of Charles' parents, which was usual for that time of the day.

When they approached their bedroom door, they suddenly heard a sound coming from within. Cautiously, they pushed the door open and found themselves face to face with Val, who was seated comfortably in a chair with a serene smile on his face.

The unexpected sight startled them, and they stood frozen for a moment. Val noticed their surprise but remained calm and greeted them in a soothing voice, "Hello!"
