Chapter 53. Rush

"Where did he go?!"

Both Misty and Rafe were stunned to see Ah Xing disappear from sight.

When they turned to look for him, they saw a red figure running away at a distance. He was over 10 meters away.

Misty reacted quickly. She turned and ran toward the police car, "Rafe! Quit standing there, get in! "

"Oh, okay." Hastily responding, Rafe turned and ran after her, resisting the urge to look back.

"Hurry up, we have to catch up to him!"

Hearing his partner's roar, Rafe got back to his senses and nimbly got into the car. As he fastened his seatbelt, he asked, "He's so fast, is that normal??"

"I don't know." In the driver's seat, Misty shook her head. Looking at the shrinking red back in the distance, she slammed down on the accelerator, "But we know it's not as simple as we thought it was."

"Tsk, I told them, he wasn't an ordinary guy." Looking at the fleeing figure and the police car that went after it, Mr Leiber shook his head with a helpless look.

  ...

"Cars on 68th Street heading southwest... Assistance needed intercepting a suspect."

"Copy that. Any details on the suspect's vehicle? "

"Suspect is on foot. Repeat, suspect is on foot. The suspect is said to be an Asian man, wearing a red sweatshirt and blue pants."

"..."

"... Sorry, could you repeat that? You mean, they're not in a car or a bike or something? ..."

"Yes. Repeat, suspect is on foot. He's fast, be careful."

"Alright... copy that."

"They're all gonna think I'm crazy." Ending the radio call, Rafe turned his head to Misty, who was driving.

"If I was the one who took that call, I'd think the same thing." Driving the police car in constant pursuit of the figure in front of them, Misty grimaced. Noticing a sudden obstacle in front of them, she hastily turned the steering wheel to avoid it and quickly pulled the brakes. The whole process was smooth as if she was a veteran driver.

Looking back at the situation behind them, Rafe withdrew his gaze and wondered, "Is he a robot or something? He's actually faster than a car." Although there were a lot of people coming and going, and the traffic caused them to slow down, such a speed wasn't something that normal people could outrun.

"Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But he's certainly not normal."

Misty wasn't as surprised as Rafe because of her previous experience with super-human cases. However, she couldn't get closer to the other party, which made her feel anxious. She had a feeling that if she could capture the other party, she would definitely discover something unexpected.

"Misty, this is downtown. It's crowded." Noticing the scowl on Misty's face, Rafe couldn't help but speak up, "I already called for backup. He won't get far."

Rafe's words slightly calmed Misty's initial impatience. She eased off the accelerator and told her partner, who was sitting beside her, "Sorry, Rafe. I was a bit impatient."

"It's fine." Rafe nodded, "Is it because of that Phantom Thief?"

Phantom Thief had been unusually active lately, and several consecutive offences had placed the NYPD under tremendous pressure. Commissioner Stacy's scowl had been hanging on his face for a week.

"It's not just because of the Phantom Thief thing." While Phantom Thief Kid's frequent crimes had left the NYPD, including Misty, on their toes, the female officer was even more concerned that a homicide case in the Third District had taken a new turn. There had been another mass suicide in the neighbourhood, with a large number of witnesses at the scene, but none of them remembered how it happened.

It was as if, at that time, everyone had uniformly lost their memories relating to the suicide case.

"I don't know if it's just me, but it just feels like being a cop in New York is just getting harder and harder." In the passenger seat, Rafe sighed.

When he first became a police officer, his biggest dream was to crack down on crime and catch criminals. And now, he had to go against people like Phantom Thief Kid.

"Even if it's hard, we still have to do it."

Replying in a low voice, the female officer glanced at Ah Xing, who was still running ahead of them and jerked the steering wheel into a side alley.

"We're at the intersection. Waiting for the suspect to show up."

At the southwest intersection of 68th Street, a police car stopped in the middle of the road, and the police officer inside picked up his radio and reported in.

"Suspect is heading towards you. Make sure you stop him."

"Don't worry, leave it to us."

"Do you believe that? Someone on foot outran a police car?" Hanging up the radio, the officer spoke to his partner, who was sitting beside him, eating a doughnut.

"Who knows? Maybe there really are people who can outrun a car? Didn't you say you believed Bigfoot was real? Why can't this be real? "

"Hey! Bigfoot is real! My cousin down in Florida got an authentic picture of the footprint, he even got a collection of the hairs from its body, so ...."

"Yeah, yeah..." The officer's partner waved his hand. He suddenly saw his talkative partner look stunned.

"Behind you! "

"What?!"

"It's the Asian guy! He's running faster than a car! "

Hearing his partner's shout, the officer in the driver's seat quickly turned his head and looked at the red figure approaching the intersection from a distance. He was startled.

Scrambling off the police car, the two men looked at the rapidly approaching figure and subconsciously gulped. They drew their own guns and shouted at him, "NYPD! Freeze! Put your hands up and stop running! You're under ..."

However, the running clone didn't give the two officers in the way a chance to finish their warning.

With a powerful and heavy stomp, a loud 'bang!' was heard.

The running figure continued to run while two cops were already behind him.

Turning their heads in bewilderment, they looked at the back of the Asian man, then down at the conspicuous footprints on the hood of the car. The two men then looked at each other in silence.

"Damn it! It took me a long time to get the precinct to assign us a new car!"
