“Did he tell you of my shame, Ishaan?” Carina’s voice was sad and broken. “Did he tell you of the time before I was Soul when he caged us like animals?”

“He didn’t tell me why.” Ishaan started on her wings as she cried into his chest. “It’s alright, my mate. I’ll never let him touch you again.”

“He sought to have a viable breeding population.” Carina said, voice hollow now. “He would have us breed like animals in order to use us for our magic.”

Ishaan’s breath caught in his throat as rage swamped him. “How- how dare they.”

Carina lifted her head to look at him with her dark, wet eyes. “You do not pull away from me?”

“Why would I pull away from you, sweet mate?” He held her closer, slipping his fingers into her feathers gently. “No part of that was your fault. We just have to come up with a plan so that it doesn’t happen again.”
