Keeper of mana (HP SI)

Nicolaus always wished for an adventure and dreamed of being reborn in a different world, of being able to use magic. Now he had it all, but was it too much for him to handle? Let's find out as we follow his path to become the "keeper of mana" - a person who collects, preserves, and spreads the knowledge of magic. GRIMOIRE

Hey everyone, I'd like to begin by apologizing for not having the next chapter ready yet. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time, and when I do find a moment, I'm often too tired to complete it.

Moving on, I want to introduce the concept of the grimoire. In this chapter, I've compiled all the information we've learned about magic in the story so far. If you find this idea intriguing, I'm considering making this a recurring feature, perhaps every ten chapters or so.

If you come across any mistakes or if I've overlooked something, please let me know. I was writing this on a bus, so there may be a few errors.

Additionally, feel free to share your thoughts if you have any ideas for expanding our understanding of magic in the story. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Mana:

Mana is one of the three base energies of the multiverse that allows the accomplishment of supernatural feats.

In the case of magi, Mana is generated by their souls and stored in their bodies. Magi can increase the amount of mana their bodies store by learning to sense and control mana within them and then compressing it so that their souls generate mana to fill the empty space left by the compressed mana. After releasing the compressed mana, it mixes with newly generated mana. Over time, this volume of mana becomes the normal state of mana in a magi's body, which the soul will generate when the magi uses up their mana. However, there is a limit to how much mana a magi's body can handle, and ignoring this limit can damage the magi and even lead to their death.

The amount of mana a soul produces also increases based on how much magic someone uses, as well as passively with age. Although this increase naturally stops once the body is close to the limit of mana it can handle.

Mana has some influence on a magi's body, making them tougher than non-magical individuals and resistant to most non-magical diseases. The higher the volume of mana someone has, the longer they will live. It is possible for a magi to live up to 400 years old.

Due to the mana in their bodies, magi have to be careful where they leave their body parts (nails, hair, blood...).

Mana manipulation is the act of consciously manipulating mana.

Condensing the mana inside a spell will make it more powerful (in the case of some spells, it makes them last longer), while adding more mana without condensing it will increase the area affected by the spell.

Enchantments:

Enchantments are effects created when a mage infuses his mana with an understanding of a particular effect through his willpower.

When activated, an enchantment becomes a spell. Spells can be composed of one or multiple enchantments.

Enchantments can be found in almost all fields of magic: necromancy (enchantments are used to animate bodies for the creation of basic inferi), elemental magic (enchantments are used to combine with elemental spells), and more.

Enchantments can be placed on objects and made to last for an extended period of time with the help of runes. Additionally, some magical materials, such as certain magical metals, will naturally hold enchantments.

Elemental magic:

Elemental magic is the use of mana to manipulate elements.

The easiest way to use elemental magic is through existing elemental spells (Wand magic), such as Aguamenti or Incendio. This can be achieved by any magi possessing a wand and knowledge of how the spell works.

The next method involves mana manipulation and an understanding of how an element works. For example, a magi comprehends how fire is created and then binds it to his mana with his willpower. This method is extremely dangerous and takes decades to master, as elements are extremely hard to control.

Another method present in this world is elemental connection through a ritual. This ritual establishes a connection between a mage and one or sometimes more elements, enabling the mage to control them freely. However, this method alters the mage's mana itself to align more closely with a specific element, making it harder for the mage to control elements that are opposite to the one they are connected to. It also enhances the mage's resistance to the element they are connected to.

Elemental spells are often facilitated by enchantments. While a mage can manipulate the element directly, this requires constant concentration. However, by using enchantments, a mage can specify what the element is supposed to do and how (think of Klaus's fire bird spell or his fireball). Once the spell is activated, the mage no longer needs to worry about controlling it.

Foci:

Foci are objects used to focus, amplify, and make mana more controllable.

Different Foci work differently (won't explain here because of spoilers).

The wand is the most popular foci in the Western world. For someone with an understanding of mana manipulation, it can make their spells more focused on a point, more detailed, and more powerful.

Spells used with a wand usually move in the direction the wand is pointing.

Wand magic:

Wand magic is a school of magic that takes spells from all other schools of magic and allows them to be cast with only wand movements and incantations, not requiring an understanding of mana manipulation.

While this is convenient, it also has its downsides. The only way to control the power of a wand spell is through emotion (Holy and unholy magic); otherwise, spells are set at a specific amount of power.

This has led to a fear of dark magic (mostly all magic that inflicts significant damage and requires emotions to do so). Dark wizards and witches are usually a byproduct of overusing unholy magic, which without proper understanding can lead to emotional instability (as they constantly rely on their darker emotions for their magic).

Wand magic is divided into two categories: transfiguration and charms. Transfiguration involves creating a physical change in something (changing a toothpick into a needle), while charms involve imparting different properties to something (making the toothpick levitate).

Holy & Unholy magic:

This is simply the act of utilizing emotions to strengthen the effects of magic. It can be used with any other school of magic.

Depending on emotions, it isn't hard to do, and it can happen accidentally a lot of the time.

This magic can be dangerous if a mage constantly uses one kind of emotion.

Divine magic:

Divine magic can also be called miracle magic. Things that a normal mage would need rituals, magic manipulation, understanding of the process, or potions for can all be accomplished with just a thought by someone able to use divine magic.

Example: To cure cancer, the mage needs an understanding of what cancer is and how it works. Then they need to create a ritual, potions, or a spell that utilizes the understanding of what will cure the cancer. Lastly, they need mana to power it.

Someone using divine magic only needs willpower and mana. Simply desiring to cure the cancer and imbuing that wish with mana will cure the cancer.

Divine magic can only be used by higher beings (Gods, etc.).

Rituals:

Rituals are a form of magic that involves using the meanings of runes, objects, plants, and so on, to manipulate mana and create a specific effect.

[Further details will be provided when Klaus starts learning to create rituals instead of just using ones that are already created.]

Rituals are considered a branch of Alchemy.

Potions:

Potions involve the use of plant and animal ingredients to create liquids that cause specific effects.

They are created by combining various ingredients to enhance the desired properties while negating the undesired ones.

Potions are considered a branch of alchemy.

Mind magic:

Mind magic is the branch of magic that deals with the manipulation of minds. The most basic application involves a mage learning to sense the mana around their brain. With practice, this skill enables them to detect when someone else's mana attempts to influence or invade their mind.
