Chapter 1

It was all quiet. The rustling of leaves filled the air, and the slight wind breeze. I was almost home. Another day of me being forgotten. It was a tiresome walk home but it wasn't my legs aching. It was my heart that hurt. I couldn't bear it anymore. I was "home" at last. I knocked on the door, once, twice, thrice, no answer. I wasn't surprised, it wasn't the first time. I went to the backyard and threw my ragged backpack aside, laid on my back and stared to the sky. My tears started flowing, and I just sat there. Afterall, it wasn't too long ago that I lost my family.

I felt a little itch on my nose. It was the mosquitoes. I opened my eyes and noticed a dim light shining. It was the indoor house lights. I got up, dusted my clothes, and knocked on the backdoor. She opened up the door, the look of displeasure on her face, and the smell of cigarettes and alcohol on her breath. "Hurry to your damn room", she said in her monotone dead voice. I went in praying her boyfriend wasn't home. To my relief, it was clear. I hurried to my room and closed the door. I couldn't lock it; the key was broken.

I didn't care much about my studies. I couldn't focus on anything. I just sat on the hardwood floor and stared at the sealing. This time, I heard a tapping on my window, I glanced at it startled. That's when I saw a little white kitten meowing at my window. I opened it and the kitten invited itself over into my room. Of course, it was welcome inside. I reached my hand out to touch it and she rubbed her head in the palm of my hand. She didn't seem like a street cat. She was well groomed and by the looks of it wasn't scared of humans.

I kept the window slightly open so it could leave whenever. It was fun to have around. I went to the kitchen and snatched a little sliced meat for the kitten. I went back and gave it to her and watched it eat. A few days went by and the kitten came over every day. Every now and then id snatch a little something for the kitten, and it just kept coming over. Id vent my problems to it. It probably didn't understand anything but I'd like to imagine that it did.

A few more days went by, and as I was going to school, I noticed a missing pet poster at the school. It was the white kitten. I knew it wasn't a street cat. It had to be for someone. It even had a reward worth thirty bucks. I didn't want to give it up, so I kept shut. It was the only thing I'd look forward to during the day. I took one of the papers and crumbled it up inside my backpack. I arrived at school and went about as normal. As the bell rang and everyone fell into place. The teacher announced a new kid that came recently. Her name was Everly. She had a kind of tanned complexion and dark hair. Seeing as to no one wanted to sit next to me leaving no other open seats, she made her way through the students and sat on the table next to me. "Hello, my name is Everly, I'm new here so I'm hoping we could get along!".

"H-Hi m-my nam-". I was cut off by another classmate, "Hi, my name is Marwan, what's yours?"
