Day off ~ 21

CHAPTER 21

I woke up hours before Amelia, I stared at the clock on the beside table next to me. The numbers twitched, it was 5:00am. Amelia would usually wake up at 7:30am for work so I figured that I'd try get back to sleep.

I didn't.

I just laid there, thinking about the future and what awaits. It was all down to Amelia that I was still alive... It hit me. Amelia was the only reason I was still alive.

The bunkbed creaked a little as Amelia rolled over in her sleep.

I wondered what she was dreaming about, probably wolves or something magical.

She was a pretty amazing artist, even if she didn't like to admit it.

I jumped at the sound of the alarm on her phone.

"ughhhh" Amelia groaned. She jumped from the top bunk to the floor which scared me a little as I was not expecting it.

I my eyes followed her as she darted back and fourth getting everything prepared for work. She paused and turned to me.

"what are you looking at?" She questioned my smug face. I laughed. "what...?" Amelia looked around behind her and everywhere to find what I was looking so smugly at.

"I'm looking at you" I finally answered, my head resting on my arms I rolled from my back to my side and faced her properly.

"You, with your frazzled hair and rugged work clothes." I sat upright and shook my head.

"I'm not sure what your on about but you'd better tell me!" I laughed.

"it's Wednesday" I caved in and told her why I was laughing.

"oh... My... Flippin god...." she huffed as she slouched backwards, her nose pointing up towards the ceiling. "whyyyyyyyyy" she groaned.

I laid back down onto my back and sighed a sigh of happiness as I smiled to myself.

Amelia got back into her pj's (I turned away as she did).

The only reason I knew she had a day off today was because I was so bored doing the washing up at work the other day that I read the weekly bulletin almost 100 times.

"You done?" I asked as I turned my head back around. She wasn't done but I didn't see anything, she was just pulling her shirt down.

It didn't make me feel awkward that I turned too early, it just felt normal. I never told her that.

Amelia walked out of the bedroom and sloppily I could hear her opening the kitchen door.

I laid there for what felt like only a few minutes but truthfully I wasn't sure how long it was. I listened to Amelia pottering about in the kitchen, I heard the kettle and... The oven? I think?

Her footsteps on the kitchen tiles were lazy and dragging.

She was always such a free spirit, why has she trusted me, a stranger, into her house and bed? Why does she trust me? Can I trust her? I'm a horrible person!

My thoughts flipped like a switch and flooded my head, soon, I was deep amongst thoughts and feelings that made my stomach gurgle as if it, itself were drowning.

"breakfasts ready!" Amelia telling from the kitchen, I snapped out of my brain.

She was like the light in my darkness at that time. I realised then that everytime I was deep under, she would be there to help snap me out of it. She was the safety ring in my swimming pool. My deep... Dark... Swimming pool.

"Damien!" She yelled slightly more agrrivatedly than before. "it's going cold!" she continued.

I didn't call back. I walked into the kitchen to see a plate with a bacon but buttie on it, steaming, all for me.

Carefully, I grabbed the plate and went to sit in the living room. Amelia was sitting in an armchair so I sat on the larger sofa that I had slept on previously.

The buttie smelled so amazing that before I could even look at it, I had stuffed it in my face. "wow.. Your hungry?" She laughed next me, truthfully I forgot she was there and I would've eaten more tidily if I had noticed her.

"oh.. Hehe.. Yeah" I laughed awkwardly but I didn't feel awkward. I just felt like the right thing to say.

"so, Damien." Amelia leans forward after putting down her empty plate and brushing away all of the crumbs. She was leaning forward, her elbows on her knees, in an interrogation kind of way.

"I was thinking maybe we could go to town today and buy you a phone and maybe some new clothes...?" she smiled after looking my up and down midly disgusted.

I had completely forgot about my clothes.

"yes, that's probably a good idea" I laughed as I looked down at my now grey, stained shirt. It used to be a clear white with a beautiful collar but the collar was now stained, as was the rest of the shirt.

So, we gathered up some change for the bus fare.
