Chapter 38

Professor Flitwick has an extensive classroom teaching background. He is also aware of how impatient most students are. He first started teaching everyone the theory of magic before moving on to practical instruction. The new students were the year's first batch. The Lighting Wand Charm was among the most significant charms created in the 18th century, and it is also one of the easiest and most useful charms they will learn.

"Say it with me, | Lumos |, come on!" Professor Flitwick spoke to the audience as if they were five-year-olds.

"| Lumos |." Everyone spoke again.

"Okay, raise your wand and ease it down. After that, say | Lumos |." Professor Flitwick conducted a practical demonstration for the entire class before repeating: "It's crucial to keep in mind the final flick and to pronounce the spell correctly. Why not give it a go right away?"

In response to the chanting of a spell in the classroom, Albert pretended to recite the mantra for Wand Lighting Charm. He was an expert with the Wand Lighting Charm, but he didn't want to brag too soon. Instead, he observed the class practise it before attempting it on his own.

"Look, everyone, Mr Anderson cast the Wand Lighting Charm successfully. Five points to Gryffindor," Professor Flitwick yelled.

Albert felt a little uneasy being observed by so many people, so he turned his head and looked at Lee Jordan, who was patting him on the back. According to Cedric Diggory's class-best performance, there aren't many students who can perform it. He cast, but it quickly lost power. Lee and the twins couldn't perform the manoeuvre here, despite Albert having taught them over the weekend.

Failure always follows success. A minor mishap occurred in the spell-learning classroom. A Hufflepuff student gave his wand a vigorous shake, which caused flames to appear in front of the wand and ignite his clothing.

Professor Flitwick gave the boy an after-lunch detention as a punishment. Hannah's, the girl who Albert had talked to and led to the Great Hall this morning, situation was not looking good. She made many unsuccessful attempts, and on one of her attempts, her wand released choking black smoke. Albert was unfamiliar with the spell used by Professor Flitwick to clear the smoke from the classroom.

"I can't do it," Shannon appeared helpless.

"Don't worry; with enough practise, anyone can perform it." Professor Flitwick consoled the students who had trouble lighting the wand as he continued, "It's not that you can't do it, it's you don't know how. You need to be focused and picture what you want to happen."

Professor Flitwick assigned a 1500 word essay on the Wand Lighting Charm to each student before the class ended. They also had to pre-read the section on the Wand lightings' Counter Charm.

Albert remained at the end of the class after it ended. He had some queries for Professor Flitwick.

"Mr Anderson, great job with the lesson on the Doubling Charm. You are quite talented in charms, so keep it up," Professor Flitwick said with a smile as he turned to face the students in front of him.

"I appreciate the praise, Professor. Can I ask you a question about a specific magic spell?" Albert asked.

"It depends. Describe it to me."

"How do I transform my wand to make an umbrella?" Albert was going to use this chance to learn the magic when he asked his question.

"Change your wand into an umbrella? Why do you want to transform an umbrella into your wand?" Professor Flitwick questioned in confusion.

"You must have missed the rain over the past two days. I then reasoned that I wouldn't have to worry about getting wet in the rain if I could just make an umbrella!" Albert spoke.

Without even trying, Professor Flitwick laughed. He recalled some of his former students, who had also considered learning spells to simplify their lives.

"Do you understand what a charm is, Mr Anderson?" Smiley Professor Flitwick enquired.

"A charm in a spell that alters or endows an object with a new quality." The charms theory that Albert just reiterated what he learned in class.

"You paid attention in class." As he nodded, Professor Flitwick said: "It would be incorrect for you to claim that your wand could create an umbrella. Without your wand, how can you reserve something that happened to it? Not at all. Either transfiguration for your third year or the Summoning Charm is what you desire. There is a third method, however. You could make a barrier and shape it like an umbrella. However you do not have the control or the magical to do that yet."

"Summoning Charm?" If he remembered correctly, Harry had just used it in the Triwizard Cups' opening challenge against the dragon.

Flitwick raised his wand and conjured a four-leaf clover.

"Did you make that out of nothing?" Albert asked.

"This is the summoning, Charm. This spell can create nothing out of thin air. We can create nothing out of nothing. It is a component of Gamps's Fundamental Law for Transfiguration." Albert received the four-leaf clover from Flitwick. "I summoned a four-leaf clover from somewhere in Britain. Simply put, Magic had found what I had desired and brought it to me."

Albert nodded in understanding.

Flitwick expressed his delight that Albert understood what he had to say, adding: "The Vanishing Curse is the opposite of the Summoning Charm and is only available if you are taking your OWL Exams. Learning the Vanishing Curse will be less difficult. I advise you to speak with Professor McGonagall if you want to learn more about this. Asking her yourself will make her happy, I can assure you of that."

"Of course, you are welcome to visit me if you do not understand the spell." Flitwick said, gesturing with his finger at the three people holding up the door: "You have class, now. Don't be late and move quickly."

I have another query, professor.

Professor Flitwick waited for Albert to continue before speaking.

"Can the Wand Lighting charm be transplanted into another item?" Albert posed another query he had on his mind. He remembered the gift Dumbledore had left for Ronald in his will.

"It's a clever concept. I believe it is possible, but it's a little challenging for you to make it. It involves topics that are not covered at Hogwarts." Albert's suggestion took back the professor. He continued, "I'm curious. What brought this question about?"

"A torch is a thing that exists in the Muggle world. By flipping a switch, the torch can produce light with a similar effect to | Lumos |. Thank you for you time," Albert said as he heard the familiar chime of the system issuing him a new mission. It read:

{The Great Inventor:

Johannes Gutenberg, Leonardo da Vinci, Robert Fulton, Samuel Morse and Nikola Tesla. What do these distinguished men all have in common? They left their names in the History brooks with their revolutionary inventions. Gutenberg created the first printing press. Da Vinci created the aerial screw. Fulton created the steam engine. Morse created the first electrical telegraph and the predecessor of the modern phone. Tesla discovered alternating currents and shared his discovery with the world and also created the induction motor. It is your time to enter the History books. Your mission is to develop and create a suitable method to transplant the Wand Lighting Charm into another object.

Mission Reward: 3000 experience points; Lumos level +1; Nox level +1; Title function; Title: Creator of the First Magical Torch }

George rushed over after Albert left the classroom and enquired, "What did you ask Flitwick?" with interest.

Albert asked, "How do I make my wand into an umbrella?"

"What did he say, then?" Fred queried.

Albert was feeling a little down when he said, "Professor Flitwick said that it was the knowledge of O.W.L. Transfiguration." He believed that his chances of mastering the Summoning charm were better.

"There's something you can't do. Who could have imagined?" As they made their way to their history class, Lee couldn't help but laugh.
